On the previous free fishing day, my friend got a citation when fishing at a like and I heard that CDFW had frequent checks in the bay as well.

As the next free fishing day is this Sat, I created a short video to help new fishermen to avoid some pitfalls.

This is the link to the video: How many fishing rods are allowed in California? (I made it bilingual as some of my friends only speak one of the languages.)

Please add your comments to the video if there is any other pitfall that new fishermen should be aware of.

I know that in freshwater, you can only use one rod at a time, unless you have a second rod stamp. So two rods in the max there.

Two pieces of gear on piers and jetties that don't require a license as well . Tight lines

Public piers don't require a fishing license, but I always carry my license for jetty fishing as someone mentioned that it's needed. Need to double check the book.

Depends on the jetty... They really need to make this more confusing

It's harder to figure out the exact rule than catching a halibut in some cases, at least for me:)

Just did my homework and found the following rule on jetty fishing. William and Werfless were right and my friend will hear more accurate info on this from me now :)

    "1.88.PUBLIC PIER. A public pier is ....

Additionally, publicly owned jetties or breakwaters that are connected to land, as described above, that have free unrestricted access for the general public and whose purpose it is to form the most seaward protective boundary of an ocean harbor are public piers. Jetties, breakwaters, promenades, sea walls, moles, docks, linings, barriers and other structures that are not the most seaward protective boundary of an ocean harbor, are not public piers."

But remember, you need to follow that to the letter.. south jetty is not 'unrestricted access' while north jetty is. The one Oceanside jetty is, the other two are not... Annoying as hell

wow this is complete new news for me. A friend and I just got into fishing again so we don't have license for this calendar year. Was going to pick one up at the start of the new year.
What can we target on North jetty that's available in Fall/winter?

Should be some bonito or cuda available off north jetty for the hard bait guys for the next month or so, mackerel awhile longer. Winter there are perch most years, opaleye and calicos almost all the time, sometimes bigger ones mixed in. The mini sculpin (usually a legal mixed in if you work at it at the right tides) are usually on the chew about sunset or so..

I'm glad that this video helped. We've caught spotted bass, calico bass, opaleye over there. It's quite slippery and we had to wear anti-slippery shoes there. Good luck.

What do you mean by anti-slip shoes? Is there a specific material that works better? I have hiking boots but not sure how those will do if the rocks are very wet.

I use the soft rubber 'servus' boots from big 5.. my favorite for gripping nasty, wet mossy rocks...
