Decided to cruise out to Hodges to check conditions, maybe fish from shore a bit in late afternoon. Got the rundown on all species and I will share the best - the carp bite was on fire. Two Asian guys on the dock had a dozen or so, with some really big ones.

I made some casts and happened across a fish in shallow water moving slowly - kinda fed him my hook. Never caught a tilapia, and did not know they got this big. Released him back into the wild, he may have been sick or dying of old age! Should've measured him, but probably 17 inches and a few pounds. Anyway here's the photo:

The tilapia are a sort of recent invader at Hodges. Don't feel shy about keeping those....or carp.

Tilapia are tough but they don’t like the cold. I imagine the water temp was in the mid 50’s which makes them lethargic and could be fatal if they have underlying health issues.

    "Tilapia don't like the cold"
I heard from boaters and kayakers that the lake water temp was around 53 degrees, and the morning air temp was 29 degrees that day - so figured that cold was likely the issue. They're more comfortable at 100+ degrees in a swamp than at these mountain-stream temps! The fish had a little bit of fine moss-like growth on lower lip (parasites?), and, the fish's sides were showing that light pink / red tone of a stressed-out fish. Seems like any fish that dies on that lake's shoreline would probably make a quick meal for a coyote or raccoon.

Is it worth it to bring a setup for cats? I prefer targeting everything besides bass lol. Will be fishing the boat ramp area. My plan right now is to make some carp bait and toss crawlers/small lures for whatever else. I’ve only fished Hodges once before

Nobody at the lake that I spoke with was targeting catfish, but from shore, that is one of your two good options (besides carp). Again though, Carp. You will see many carp ... getting caught, jumping, splashing, swimming by, etc. The guys targeting them were hardcore - using telescoping 12' poles with no reels, specialized folding chairs with rod holders (made for carp fishing) and high-end terminal tackle direct from China - like that specialized bobber with its own case that runs $80 bucks, and complex very precise connections, splitters, and leaders. Serious gear. So much about that is interesting. Anyway, two biggest stringers witnessed that day, each with a different type of fish, each totaled over 30 lbs ... but many people got skunked. Let's leave it at that.

Had a few carp bites but was not able to land anything. Lots of people were out there on the bank and docks today, did see two dudes with the huge cane poles catching a couple though. Also some guy brought a turtle and released it into the lake where I was fishing

Photo update from the kayak of almost half of a limit. I also missed a bunch of bites and lost quite a few along with some mystery fish. 6 of these fish were in the 2.75 lb. range on the digital scale, the stringer close to 28 lbs. on the concession spring scale.
