A few years ago I bought a Johnson 15hp. I was happy to find out the previous owner used it only at the Colorado river on his duck hunting boat. Never been in saltwater until I bought it. I've put maybe 10 saltwater hours on it, maybe twice that in fresh.Turns out the very hard water of the river is heavy in calcium. The head, water jackets and thermostat had heavy buildup that needed to be removed. The impeller was good but the upper water tube grommet needed replacing. Looking for a freshwater only outboard can be a good thing, but there's things to look out for on those too.

    Never thought of that.
We all flush out our motors with fresh water when we get back.
I've never kept a motor long enough to tear it down.
Hopefully others will chime in on that
    subject.

I spent a winter in Canada. The water there was really hard... and cold!

Boy! You sure got that right. The water we irrigate with in the Imperial Valley is so high in calcium you can’t use the USDA accepted calcium test until you add nine parts distilled water with one part Colorado River water when testing a soil extract for calcium levels. If we add anhydrous ammonia as a source of nitrogen fertilizer to our irrigation water it creates a precipitate of calcium that drops out through a chemical reaction that coats our concrete ditches with a thick white coating.
