After being skunked on the Grande (see my report here: https://sdfish.com/forums/t/grande-full-day-11-8-late-post.183559/ ), I decided to try one more trip to catch my first tuna. I needed redemption and I couldn't wait till next season.

After seeing the amazing reports after last Friday, I booked an overnight trip through H&M on the Old Glory. I was a bit worried after the not so stellar reports on Thursday.

I arrived at 7:40 PM only to wait around for 20 minutes for parking as the lot was full and Point Loma landing had a boat come back and were distributing fish to their anglers. I finally found a spot and got in line to check in at H&M. The Old Glory and the Grande just come in (actually the OG came in a little later) and I was excited to see all the fish that was being unloaded.

    If this doesn't excite you...

Needless to say I had high hopes.

We left late as the OG arrived late, but no worries, I was ecstatic that the fish were still biting. We were at the bait barge at 10:45 PM. Here's a shot of the OG:

The crew were some of the best. I really appreciated how Captain Junior brought us in to the galley to give instructions, expectations, and what setup to use out there. It's hard to hear at the back of the boat as I've experienced other crew give instructions on other trips. The instructions were to fish 30# line with #2 hooks. Hit the sack at 11:30 PM and set my alarm for 3:30 AM. We were hoping to start fishing for possible BFT at 0400.

Hard to sleep when you're chomping at the bit to get a line in the water! I was up by 3:20 AM only to wait until past 7 AM to throw a sardine for nada. I packed a 20#, 25#, 40#, and 50# rig. So, I mostly used the 25# setup per the instructions. We trolled for another hour or so and someone hooked up, yes! This could be it...but it wasn't. Lost the fish, which apparently messes up the school. So, more boating and searching. Saw about 10 boats (Sport and private) parked at what looked like a productive school. We kept going, looking for our school. Fished a small kelp paddie for nada and kept going. We found a school that looked productive and one angler landed the first YFT, yes! But his buddies weren't interested in our tethered dines. More boating...

Around, 10 AM, captain announces, "Standby"--these are some of the most exciting words to hear out there. Sometimes it's a play on emotions, but this time seemed different. The deckhand started chumming and shortly after, we started fishing.

I was first to yell: "Fish on!" and man o man was that amazing. The tuna didn't start fighting until he realized that the dine he just swallowed came with string attached ;) Others started hooking up...it was on! I fought mine for a good 10 minutes and the deckhand mis-gaffed the tuna only to piss it off sending it out for another 5 minutes of fighting. Second time I yelled, "Color!" and my very first Tuna was on the boat! Man was I pumped! There aren't too many experiences in life that get close to the sensation...kinda close to seeing my kids birthed out of the womb.

    Money shots:
