We're about due for annual Family Crystal Beach Pier trip, and while there I try to get some morning or evening surf fishing in... So I was wondering about the sand crab availability and the red tide/ salad conditions.. I'm not a pier fishing guy, but will probably do a little with my Grandson and Son and would appreciate any intel on what has been biting lately... If you don't want to post the intel, a PM would work just fine... Anyway I'll give some reports while there... And as always, thanks to you locals for the use of your beaches and fishies.:emoji_slight_smile:

Was there 5 days ago and worked the area from the pier up to the MLPA at Diamond St. Did not see any sc beds but you can usually find them under the pier. Did not check as already found some earlier at Mission. MB was packed solid with kelp & grass but PB at the pier was surprisingly clean water that day. Swell conditions were kind of rough, did not get anything on to the sand, only nibblers/bait stealers. Hope you get into a few.

Stick to PB and north Mission Beach. South Mission beach was unfishable last time I was there.

Here is a shot of the jetty. Water was brown with kelp. Probably the worst I have ever seen it there.

Was on Ocean Beach two days ago, it was piled high with kelp. Haven't been to MB in awhile.

I havent hit MB/PB in a minute either, I would imagine their are crab beds, since their are both to the south (ob) and north (la jolla).

I was out at OB this evening. Complete crapfest lol. First I couldn't find my fishing liscense, delayed me an hour tearing apart my car and apt before I found it. Then I get to the beach, parking lot is completely packed. Zero spots. Weird for an overcast 60 degree tuesday with close out surf. Get on the beach, salad out of control. South of the stub jetty was unfishable. A few areas were relatively clean but skunko. And I almost got spooled by a kelp ball lol. There were more crab beds today than last week, but could mostly only find micros. I should have taken the omen when a huge hole right infront of a crab bed didnt produce a bite.

Hahaha I had the exact same thing happen to me at Torrey Pines yesterday. I found this pretty deep trough right in front of an enormous crab bed, with some rocky structure right adjacent. And I thought, well if there's no fish in here I don't even know what to think - tried to cast through it several times but was instantly getting bogged down with eel grass and no bites.

Man, you guys are depressing me... All of the salad, and no fish... Not what I wanted to hear.. But it is, what it is... I've come down there with huge piles of kelp mounded everywhere, but managed to get some fish, so I'm gonna stay hopeful... Keep up the reports, and I'll keep checking here until we head down... By the way, I was gonna go back after those leopard sharks, with some heavier dear, this morning... But instead I get to play plumber, on a leaking upstairs shower faucet... Water leaking out of a downstairs light fixture... Not good...

Ok, 1st day fished, I got 2-small BSP on frozen blood worms. A few other bites between all the kelp and eel grass… I found some small, but usable sand crabs for in the AM…. New report tomorrow. Some wind and mostly cloudy. Surf is so-so.
    Butch.

2nd day. 19-20 BSP on tripled up sand crabs. All from one hole, that was a bite every cast until it shut down. Salad a little better. Conditions ok. 1 perch was the largest I’ve caught in the last couple of years, and another was a decent size female that had already released her young. The rest cookie cutters. Fun stuff
