Caught on a fresh mackerel chunk. 46.5 inch wingspan. Estimated weight of around 90 to 100 pounds. Penn slammer handled this big girl very well! Caught in mb.

Nice fish dude! That big girl took a 3 inch mackerel chunk? Lol always wondered if the bigger fish would even be interested in small chunks

Seeing as how fishing is literally stabbing fish through their mouths I don't really have a high ground here but I figured I'd ask anyway. Is it necessary to pick up the rays. Since most people always brag about wingspan wouldn't a measurement across be enough. I can imagine being lifted up by my nostrils wouldn't feel to good. Does it hurt the fish?

I doubt it hurts them to any appreciable degree. The sheer number of big rays present in the bays that seem to have been caught many many times is absolutely staggering. What they go through in everyday life probably makes getting caught by a fisherman not as big of a deal than we think it is...

I don't imagine it's comfortable, but I'm also doubtful that it causes pain. Due to difference in anatomy it's more like being picked up around the base of your neck, or even around your shoulders. In the long term, you'll definitely have some damage but for a quick lift, snap, then set down? Don't think so

Is it common to find them with scars from previously being caught?

Yeah it’s probably not comfortable and it’s not really necessary but I’m only holding it for a few seconds to take a picture. Also there’s not really another SAFE way to grab them. I mean I could grab him by the mouth when I bring him onto the beach but there is a large circle hook somewhere in that mouth lol.

I caught a bat ray about a month ago that had a about a half dollar size hole on its belly. I don’t think it was caused by a hook, but the hole was big enough for me to see his guts yuk!

Find em with rusting hooks in their mouths, cut off tails, chunks of wire in their flesh, gaff holes, etc.. and still fighting like hell... Lol
