Is there spool tensioning on this reel? The freespool is so loose and I have to put so much thumb pressure on it when casting that I'm loosing distance from the pressure I put on it with my thumb. My problem may be that I'm using straight braid with a short mono top shot and that stuff flies off the spool much easier? I'm getting backlash while halfway to my distance way before it is close to midflight. Any suggestions guys? My solution has been to put that set up away and use my Lexas LOL.

What are you using this reel for? I'm assuming you aren't targeting anything big, not if your Lexa's are your back up plan. The entire Fathom star drag line (non levelwind) come with either magnetic or centrifugal brakes depending on the size. So if ease of casting is important then maybe consider selling the two-speed and buying a star drag instead.

Unless you are in need of a large two-speed reel... in which case you can ignore everything I just posted.

It was purchased as a reel for baitsticking Bluefin on an 8' Terramar but I used it last night to see if any big Rays or Leo's would bite the bait and wait and was dying on my casts. It works for what I bought it for, I think I was just getting caught by using the wrong rod/reel in that application. I don't due a lot of shore fishing so I would be at the beginning side of that learning curve.

Got it. That makes more sense.

FYI, you don't need a 30 size reel for local sharks and rays. You can find pictures online of people catching 100lb sharks with Fathom 12's. I use a 15 for my shark fishing reel.

I agree, I am normally a guy who fishes much lighter gear than others and have caught plenty of Yellowfin on the Lexa 300 reels but I know there are some dead weight rays that get over a hundred pounds and my Fathom is set up with 40 so I grabbed it. I was successful at killing a few grapefruit sculpins though last night!

Are the 100# still here. Still bought cheap 80# 160 yds of Walmart mono for leaders for rays and sharks with teeth.

Still some around. Think MB main channel East of the bridges. DAC has a reputation for a reason I suspect...
