My wife got a phone call from India about a refund for a charge from three years ago on her old Apple computer saying that they are refunding one year.
I took over the phone because they wanted access to her new Apple computer and she said no.
I talked with the man and he said that they needed access to her new computer to fill out the form. I said just mail us the form, we'll fill it out and mail it back. He said that they can't do that, so then I said just credit back our credit card. No the technician needs access to the computer to fill out the form and remove the program.
Again I said that the old computer doesn't work and the old program isn't on the new computer. He said if the technician can't have access to the new computer we wouldn't get the refund and he'll tell the supervisor we don't want the refund. It must of been some tect support my wife did three years ago and now they tried to access the old computer and couldn't do it.
Refund would of been less then $50.00. I'm not that stupid yet, getting there though. LOL

My in-laws got a call similar to this... last year I think? Wife and I weren't around to stop them. My ebay addicted father in law got to go 5 days without a computer while theirs was in the shop getting every last bit of crap the guy had loaded onto their computer remotely taken back off. And they tried doing it again three weeks ago...

My elderly mother receives them constantly. Caller ID solved that. If you aren't a close friend or family I suggest writing her a letter.

Had you fallen for it here is how the rest of the call would have gone:

    1. He would have issued a refund to your PayPal account that was accidentally WAY too much. (usually a zero too much, like $3000 instead of $300.

    2. Then he would panic like he was going to get into deep do do if you did not help him make it right. (For this he would have been up for an Oscar)

    3. Making it right would have involved you buying a cash card and wiring it to them. Or something to that effect. "There is no way that I can reverse the mistake I have made, you must help me". (You can here that in Rajeesh speak, right?)

    4. You find out that the PayPal account that you saw was not yours at all but rather a screen shot that the scammer had produced. You never had any money in "your" PayPal account. But now he has a lot of your Money and there is nothing you can do to get it back.

If somebody calls you and has an Indian accent, it is a scam, PERIOD!

Your probably right. After spending about five minutes with him he said that I was wasting his time and that he had other people to help.

I get that a lot also. On the cell phone I just add them to the block list.

My grandpa got a call saying "Hey grandpa, its your grandson Jeff(who is really his grandson). I am in jail for doing something bad and I need 3,000 dollars to be bailed out" Luckily my grandpa is still somewhat "with it" and asked the scammer questions only his grandson/family would know and eventually debunked the situation. Its crazy the tactics these guys come up with.

Good for him, that scam has been on the news to warn people about it.
My father in law lost around $8000 when he was alive on the Green Dot cards that you buy, then give the number on the back of the cards to the scammer. When his wife was alive and he got those type of calls she would take the phone away from him.

Who answers a unrecognized number anyhow? If they don’t leave a voicemail they can bugger off.

I rarely answer the phone for people I do know, let alone those I don't.

    me: Hi, who is this?
Caller: Oh, c'mon Grandpa, you don't recognize the voice of your favorite grand daughter?
    me: I don't have a grand daughter.

Yeah these guys knew my name and my grandpas name and said I was in jail in Mexico and he needs to send money to bail me out. I thought it was some dirtbags i might have grown up with or something until i heard about this thread. People like my grandparents are easy prey not being tech savvy at all... my grandma still asks why i sounded like a robot on my voicemail on the cellphone.” Hello you have reached the voicemail box for the number *** *** **** please leave a message” that automated response still throws her for a loop hahaha

Because what if there really is a kidnapped Nigerian prince who needs my help? If I leave him hanging I might miss out on some serious cash!

I hate to say it but I know someone that recently allowed access to his computer for one of these computer access scams. I'm sure he is glad that he has the money to take care of all the issues he is now having but he is not happy about it. It's sad how hard we have to work to keep what little we have. No it was not me but a co-worker. I would have a good time with them but I never answer unknown numbers for just this reason.

I still answer the phone just so that I can add them to the blocking list with my new phone. While they are still talking I just hit the call block button.
