I got an email from Photobucket yesterday saying that the free accounts will no longer support 3rd Party Hosting. They will no longer support the embedding of photos in forums and other 3rd party sites and the <img> tag will be disabled. To upgrade to an account that will support 3rd party hosting would cost $399 a year. I have not used Photobucket for some time now, but many of the old posts were made using that format for photos. Kellen, my question is will the photos in those old post be disabled. I went back to look at some of them, and the photos seem to be in the current format even with the BBCode editor on, i.e, they no longer appear to be in the <img> format. Kellen, I forwarded a copy of the email to you.

I went back and deleted a couple of the old photos from Photobucket. Even though deleted there, they still showed in the SDFish posts, so one would think that even if they disable the embed function, they will still show up here. I refreshed, but did not go back and clear the cache.

Edit: I see that now the photo still appears in the post but not in the thumbnail for the post.

I have an installed system in the forum software that converts hot-linked images (those hosted on other sites) to attachments that are hosted on our server. Not all images are able to be converted, but most are.

So that should protect most of the photos affected here with Photobucket's change. But there will no doubt be some old posts affected where the images no longer work.

This topic is a bit late, as it has been more than two weeks since Photobucket first held everyone's photos for ransom. What was it like ten plus years of photos across the internet suddenly wiped out? A lot of sites were hurt by the surprising move, most notably websites that had step by step photo tutorials, and there will be a lot of material on the web that will be forever marred with dead photo icons.

Anyways, thank you for fixing the problem on this site. That is hugely helpful compared to the problem other sites are having, which is having to reupload years worth of old photos.

    Cheers.

An alternative to Photobucket (haven't used it in years) is imgur.com. Free. Don't even have to create an account if you don't want to save your uploads. Drag pics from your folder to their webpage and pics upload automatically. Super easy. :)

I actually had no idea this was coming, or happened. I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention. So I can't take credit for fixing anything :emoji_wink:.

I just didn't like the idea of having to depend on outside sources, so looked for a solution to prevent that.

I suspect they must be phasing it in. I just got the original notification email yesterday. It did not say when the features would be disabled in my account, but as of now everything still works. Looks like stored photos will still be available even for the free accounts, but not much else. I usually just delete the Photobucket emails without reading, but this one had got caught up in a spam filter and caught my eye.

What Photobucket did sucks. I don't have a problem with them wanting to monetize 3rd party hosting. The point of a business is to make money. They can decide to charge what they want and see how it goes. What seems to me to be a bad business choice was to provide almost no notice. I have more than one photo bucket account and they were restricted at different times over the last two weeks (the last one today). No email about the changes was received ahead of time. A 30 day notice would have been nice.

Anyway, I caught on right away when Kellen added the scripts to suck up hot-linked images and covert to attachments. Pretty cool Kellen!

Its possible that even with Photobucket's change, if you insert a url with IMG tags, SDFish server may still be able to grab the file. I will probably test this later (it still worked last Friday).

I think we have always had the ability to upload images as attachments. I always hot linked since it was easy to wrap images with text commentary that way.

I will have to play with uploading images as files on my next fishing report and see how I can work with that. I do all my image processing for SDFish posts on my iPad or iPhone. I ingest into the device using wifi or using a card reader. Some thing I want to see is how well uploading multiple image files from my iPad and iPhone to SDFish behaves. On some other forums iPad and iPhone images all get sucked up with the same file name, which causes issues. Upload speed isn't an issue since I size the images to a max 800 pixels on the longest edge, which results in a small file that still displays at a sufficient size on even my 5K iMac screen.

Meanwhile I have a couple of server accounts where I can host files but most people don't have this option.

You shouldn't have any trouble uploading through SDFish, but let me know if you do.

I tried to make it as easy as possible. You can upload all your attachments at one time, and then while creating your post you'll have a list below your post's input box with the photos you attached.

There are buttons next to each photo thumbnail to place the image inside the text box at the spot your cursor was at. So its pretty easy to wrap text as well, and you can either select a thumbnail or the full image to be placed in the post.

If for whatever reason you upload photos and forget to place them inside the post in certain spots, any unused photos will automatically be posted at the bottom of your post.

They can be a max of 3,000 pixels in any direction, and you can have up to 25 per post.

So that's why I am having trouble getting my photos to show. I thought I knew how to do it. I'm glad someone mentioned Imgr.com because I would have been lost. This is the second image hosting site to go down that I had all my pics on. So glad I read this. Thanks for the info all!

I don't think they went down, they just want $$$. I sure wish I understood all of this. I need "photo posting for idiots".

Well yeah, the other one didn't actually go down they just wanted money too. Remember back in the day when EVERYTHING on the internet was free?

The software here makes it really easy. It seems to take the photo almost any way you want to do it. Case in point, I just did the drag and drop thing with this one from another tab on Foxfire:

    170805074013-05-vladimir-putin-0805-exlarge-169.jpg

Then for the fun of it, I right clicked on the same photo on the other site and did the "copy image" thing. Back to SDFish and "paste."
    upload_2017-8-5_10-20-38.jpeg

Then to round it out, I did the thing with the "image" button on the post template, inserting the URL:
    170805074013-05-vladimir-putin-0805-exlarge-169.jpg

I am sure there are other ways to do it, but all those seem intuitive to me, and I am no computer geek.

I probably should have mentioned that when posting one of my own photos, it is easiest for me to simply drag and drop from a gallery in File Explorer.

Oh, and to prolong this agony even more, when I want to post a photo from my phone it is easiest for me to just tether the phone to my desk top and use the "Upload a File" option. The drag and drop thing doesn't seem to work for me from the phone. This is a shot from when we were picking out a new counter top.

I should have chosen a picture from the same article that might be more appropriate for SDFish members.

Now lets all imagine our own president fishing without his shirt. Nah! I can't seem to unsee that mental image either.

Well the pictures you've been posting give me hope. This is the only forum I struggle on to get pics to post. I use the "image" thingy. When the box pops up I place my link there and it's hit and miss if anything comes up. I usually get brackets with "img" in it and nothing more. I'll try some of your suggestions.
