Slow morning at Tidelands for me today. Caught a bass near the Naval base and got some good underwater photos of it. Then this guy Juan padded up to me asking for a picture of him and this 40" doormat he caught on a green hook up bait south of the base. The wind pushed me in almost perfectly back to the beach, but only one more bass. Nice day.

Is that a fly you are using? And if so, how do you fish it? Slow retrieve or Lift and drop? I am always looking for new lures and the different kinds of techniques to fish with. Thanks in advance and very cool underwater shots!

Yes, I was fly fishing. I usually let it sink to the bottom then do 2 or 3 quick strips and a pause, imitating an escaping shrimp. Sometimes I just drift with it and it gets hit. Always varying the retrieve to see what will trigger a bite though. Photos were with my phone, inverted with just the top half submerged. No lining up, just taking blind shots and every once in awhile something good comes out.

I'm not familiar with him, but it was the best way to describe the 2 fish I saw, and explicitly not take credit for the guy's monster halibut.
