We left shelter island at around 9 am and headed for hard bottom near Point Loma. I caught a 2lb sand bass off the bottom but I left because I was having trouble staying keeping the weight on the bottom. I started trolling my rapala purple mackeral xrap 30 at 7 nautical miles. We started about half mile west of the southern tip of the Point Loma kelp and started trolling heading north. I caught a decent sized yellowtail shown below at 12:30. At about 1:30, I hooked what I believe to have been a bonito that I lost. Conditions were good, waves weren’t too bad and there was a little bit of wind.

Nice! I fished that area Saturday AM, but it seamed like nothing was overly hungry. I got 4 Calicos in about 2.5 hours on plastics but never found bird schools doing anything more than a single dip. You won!

I kept my eye out for birds but I’d didn’t really see any bird life out there.

Not actually working just single birds dipping, I need big schools of terns, gulls, and Pelicans for my talent level, and that didn’t happen. 6EF45402-15B9-4A24-9365-2D7B006D0F2F.jpeg

Kelp line is all but gone. It's tucked up real close to shore. This last month has been brutal out there as far as it's huge swell and undercurrent plus the red tide. All the bird life is stacked 2-5 miles off the coast. Massive amount of bait out there. The YT, bonito, Cuda have all been 2 mile straight off hill street. Caught this 15.1lb bone out there this weekend. Not to far off the coast if you look in the background. I've been in a few wide open bites out there recently. The YT are cool but the bones are cooler! There larger and stronger. 2 weeks back landed a 19lb bone in the same area. The fight was YF like! If not stronger. Also the cudas are largest I've seen in years.all great eats! It's definitely looking to be a great year. But who knows

Nice one. Caught off the troll or saw action and threw the Rapala at them?

Well the grass is growing! Kelp rebounded and has gotten bigger each day I've been out so it's like the forest is back until the warm up

Honestly I do fish the rapala as it is a lure. But I had just slung it and put it in the holder as we started to circle the outside birds. I know it's not popular but nothing's better then chucking a rapala and feeling it swimming vibrations down the spine of your 10' just to sink into the unknown as they strike it! It's catching on tho I'm starting to see more people sling rapalas, from boats like we do Taddys. The jetty guys have been doing it forever. I love surface iron action but rapala rippin is so fun. Try it at the islands if you can. There's no need for a hot bait if your rippin a medium diver or deepdiver as fast as you can back to the boat. Plus it loads up the line nicely on the reel with the pressure it causes. leading to less backlash for such light lures
