I can't be the only one that cringes when I here certain mispronunciations.

My "favorite", by far is: Important pronounced impor-ent! I hear it even on the news! Others include cur-ens and moun-ens!

I know there are more impor-ent things to complain about, but I am trying to forget those!

The Rosie Perez school of linguistics.

    My submission: A.

It's the first effing word in the dictionary. It's pretty common, but people can't seem to pronounce it right. "Uh." That's it. Not "ay."

It's particularly annoying when a newscaster or announcer (in a commercial) mispronounces it. Why?
Because it makes it obvious that you're reading from a script rather than just speaking.

Read these out loud. Get uh clue. Get ay clue.

Which one sounds natural? Which one sounds like a first grader, pointing at the words as they read a sentence in class.....

    Scab picked. Rant off.

The KUSI morning show had a girl doing the weather on there that said Moun-ens..it took about 2 weeks to correct her because of viewer complaints. She only lasted a few more months! I'm sure Fisheromen had her whacked!

You haven't even touched on this stuff until you've been pushed through the Catholic school system. Alllll daaaay long - Catholicism, spelling and penmanship. Think of what its like for me? I can only tell you regardless of pronunciation, I'm sick of hearing one word... "LIKE." "I'm like feeling like sick." "Okay, so you're feeling something akin or similar to sick?" "No, I'm like really sick." "What's like sick?" See where this could go? Those of us shoved through the parochial system will understand. There (used to be anyway) a huge difference in parochial vs. public school teaching and lessons. Yes, I was an altar boy. It got me nowhere except out of class for funerals, First Friday masses, and morning masses during Lent.

All country singers get this wrong!

Speaking of singers, that word should be pronounced sing-er, NOT sing-ger!!! Only this latest generation talks like this! Who knows where they got it. UK?

Fortunately that one is dying, and none too soon! It was terrible in the 90's! I'm, like, not exaggerating!

Ever hear Judge Judy get all over some illiterate for using "basically"? Really funny!

I cringed every time I heard JFK pronounce nuclear as "nucular". Throw in his Boston accent and we got a somber speech to the nation on the Quber missle crisis and the threat of nucular war.

Another fan out of the closet ! I love it ! That's home, for me anyway. It's the dying commitment to family, the value of a true hard days work, loyalty and respect that our up and coming generations will never know and understand.

GWB had the same problem! So much so that it was circulated that "there are two ways to pronounce nuclear."
Actually there are; the right way and the wrong way!

Speaking of right and wrong ways, when I was in school the "t" in often was silent, like soften! That rule has completely gone by the way!

Don’t get me started about Japanese words that is common English vernacular now.

I get corrected by Americans how to say these words…It’s just easier for me to say it wrong so they understand me or don’t try to correct me

    karaoke
    It’s: Ka-ra-o-ke…..not Carry-Oh-key

    Sukoshi……. Su-ko-shi. not Skosh

    Sake…..Saa-kay not. Sa-key

    Karate….ka-ra-te ….not ka-raaa-tayy

How do you say these words?
    Arigato
    Teriyaki
    Tokyo
    Sukiyaki
    Toyota
    Yokosuka
    Hiroshima
    Tofu

    I just laugh…..

Has anyone else ever noticed how words/phrases can be "invented" overnight by influential people (Hollywood idiots, social media darlings)? And by the next day, the general public (mostly kids that idolize them) is adding them into their own vocabulary? The black community is HUGE on this. A brother or sister can dream-up practically any word or phrase and put it on social media. And by the next day, people of all colors, backgrounds and ages are doing their level best to integrate that "speak" into their own vocabularies. The latest "professional" phrase that has always killed me is, "At the end of the day..."
