Back off Pt Loma this morning with Tomaso. Launched around 0600, left Mission bay and headed south. Started off slow but we left fish biting at noon having caught enough for the day. Three dozen or so calico bass. The bass averaged a bit over legal size with some 2-3 pounders mixed in. For some variety there were some pencil barracuda, mini macks, and a solitary kelp rockfish. Seems I get a couple of these every year. Most of the bass were caught about 20 feet down over submerged kelp in 60 feet of water that was about 75 degrees. No bites in some areas of 79 degree water. We also saw more anchovies than I recall ever seeing. The meter screen seemed covered in red blobs much of the time. In one case a school passed under us for more than 10 minutes. It was still passing when we moved because we were not getting any bites around the big bait balls. That was a pattern that we noticed - couldn't get any bites around the big bait balls. Lots of birds working them too. We only saw a few fish boils all morning.
