Friday the 13th. On the water by 6am and picked up my small damiki popper to start off the morning. Working some shorelines on the main lake I pick off a few and notice that the conditions are constantly changing at the lake. Water level seems to be dropping and all the grass that was matted up on the surface two weeks back is now high and dry in the trees. The bass didn’t seem to mind though. Landed three on topwater and got another on a senko after it missed the popper. I was only an hour in! Moving into the Barona arm I threw an underspin around the deep submerged trees in the middle and got WHACKED. Immediately took me into the trees and popped off. Bummer because it felt like a really nice one. As 9am approached the topwater bite slowed as the marine layer burned off and the sun came out. Switching to my dropshot I try the shallower zones between 12-18 feet for nothing. This had been the magic depth for me most of June and July and it’s really no surprise the fish moved deeper. Started targeting the 25’ mark and saw an improvement in the fishing almost right away. Around 10:45 I’m working a main lake point when I hook what seems like another solid 2lber. The fish was coming up really fast and because the water is so clear there I see this tank swimming vertically up to the surface getting ready to jump. I drop my rod tip in the water as a huge mouth breaks the surface. After the jump the fish takes a strong run to deep water and I followed her out to try and get away from the trees and structure. Playing the fish in open water made me feel better and I took my time. I absolutely love catching bigger fish on finesse gear because it’s such and intense and exciting fight. It seems like the big swimbait guys just grind em in. Anyway after about a ten minute fight I net the beauty and couldn’t be happier. Ended the day with six fish with the kicker being 7.1 pounds.

Nice! There is the "unexpected" fish. Couldn't agree more about the fight! Though your 10 minutes was probably more like 3-4! :)

Nice fish, great write up; but I was at semi-crowded El Cap with over flow from a closed San V on the 13th. Am I just old and confused or did I miss something?
