Went back to the same Cardiff spot today. Hooked up two but just landed this one. Stoked to be figuring some stuff out. My question is: this halibut swallowed the lure. Bottom treble way down its throat. I was able to do surgery and believe this non legal halibut survived, but could have gone either way. Question is, should I have kept the non legal fish, or did I do the right thing by hoping it would survive the incident?

Not legal to keep the fish. So don't, unless you want that 400$ going to the state. Can buy quite a few halibut dinners for 400$.. probably more

One more benefit of switching the trebles for single hooks, easier to unhook the shorts... at the same time , many halibut anglers use a trap hook treble for better hookup ratio :emoji_thinking:

Aka stinger hook. Some people snell a hook to hook in a bait’s nose, and with the tag end tie a treble hook to hook near the bait’s anal fin. Some people say it’s necessary when targeting halibut, some people say you are only hurting the shorts because the true beasts inhale the bait. Up to you to decide... lingcod are another species where the trap hook comes into play.
