I recently bought a .22 Pellet 1,000 fps Break Barrel Air Rifle, and want to head somewhere for Target Practice (only), with my Son. Where are the local areas that I could do that in Legally in, would I need any type of Permit (for Target Practice), and can someone show me on a map, or Zip Codes (I've been looking it up for awhile now, but can't really find specifics for our County)?

It will not be as restrictive as firearms.

Here is a link to the SD County Sheriffs map of open areas . MapServer, If you know someone with private property in an unincorporated area , it is probably Your best bet . Most of the public lands are open for lawful pursuit of game but not target shooting . You and your son should take a hunter safety course and get Licensed for hunting . At least you can say we are hunting . As quiet as most air rifles are it is unlikely that any one would know you are in an area . Just make sure not to litter with targets ETC . Bagged charcoal briquettes make good reactive targets with benign litter , if you catch my drift .
    Shoot safe . WR

Some modern pellets are as loud as a 22. (rifle) Not sure why!

I just practice in my back yard, but then I have about a 60 foot sandstone bluff directly in back. No chance for a ricochet. An airgun of that caliber and speed will penetrate a Three quarter inch pine fence board so do be careful. I use to use an old steel wheelbarrow tipped upside down for a bullet trap, also, old strips of heavy duty carpet will work. Hope this helps

Too much oil in the barrel will exacerbate that sound. It can be pretty loud.

Sounds like fun. I enjoy the same pastime with my son. Careful though -- might lead to further "acquisitions" if you catch my drift!

Honestly Bro., It doesn't let me pull up those maps/links. It says that the SD Sheriff Map "cannot be found", as well.

Shoot heavy pellets. I just got a Gamo Magnum .22 and the PBA ammo sounds like a 22 rimfire anything over 14 grains seems to stay sub sonic and is pretty quiet. It is addicting and learning how to shoot a break barrel accurately is like learning to shoot all over again. Whole different technique then shooting a regular rifle.

Beeman Kodiac pellets @ 21.14 grains in 22 cal , really hit hard , and tend to be quiet in most . The accuracy can suffer a bit if the twist rate is too slow , depending on the manufacturer . The old Feinwerkbau spring gun I have is really deadly with them ,just getting hard to find parts for the gun anymore . WR

My gun really likes the Gamo red fires at 20-30 yds. 1/2" groups are no problem. The Kvintor point 23 grain pellets hit high at 25 yds but group real nice. I want to see what they will do at 50. I have only put a few tins of a 100 through the gun so it is just starting to settle in. The only issue is the 42# required to **** the thing. After about 30 shots you dread having to **** it, I mean I start asking myself if the power is worth the pain. I guess when I take a turkey with it all the pain will have paid off.
