It's official now. Vail Lake will close at the end of the month and will not reopen in January. For most of the year there has been no boat launching because of the low water, but it was still open to shore and tube fishermen. When the lake was bought by Rancho Water a couple of years ago, most us assumed then that recreation would take a back seat, and that turned out to be true. With the lake already low last fall (2015), the water district decided to take about 40% of the remaining water to recharge underground storage. Another drought year and here we are. With it closing now and with the management company no longer in place, don't count on it reopening any time soon.

@Fishbreath , gave you a few banner years! Not many people had the kind of fishing you had there.

Yes, definitely an amazing run. Most of the fish you see in the The best of Fishbreath slideshow are from Vail. What a beautiful lake with little fishing pressure. The eight years I spent there are by far the most memorable in over seven decades of fishing. One year I caught over 3500 fish averaging 36+ bass per trip. That year had several days over 100 bass with a personal best 200 bass one day. Lots of good fish in the mix too, with 28 bass over seven pounds another year. My personal best five-bass limit of 35.1 lbs came from there along with a personal best 18.5 lb channel catfish. It is also an amazing crappie lake.

That is some very sad news not only for us anglers but those of us that have shared great memories there. As a child we would camp there every summer and enjoyed both camping and fishing. I will cherish the memories and good family time we spent there on vacations. :(

I didn't ask about the campground, so I just did. The campground will stay open. Even though that is something I never used, I see it as a positive. The water district will not be completely out of the recreation business, and since the same management company that runs the campground ran the lake, I would think that would make it easier to get the lake back up and running if we ever get rain. Thanks for asking.

The whole situation is ****...seems like it will likely be closed for good. The water district is anti water use recreation. Going to miss this place.

I agree. I've heard from someone in a position to know that the water board wants to turn it into some sort of preserve and not reopen it for fishing even if it refills.

I never fished there but from what I used to hear it was always one of the, ( if I ever get a chance I want to fish there lakes ) doesn't look good now, I'll wait to scratch it off my list just in case, you never know. Thanks for the update though

Access is still allowed for shore fishing and it should remain open for fishing as long as there is water behind the dam. F&G Code 5943 and 5944 state that the owner of a dam shall provide access to the public for fishing and they are not liable for damages incurred while fishing. However, it may cost you $$$ again to launch your boat and fish once the water get high enough to launch again. That is their prerogative.

Perhaps this is only when the dam is privately owned? Lake Mathews, Olivenheim Reservoir are two that fishing is verboten in, not to mention the many lakes that have extended closed seasons.....
