Ruth Bader Ginsberg, the enigmatic, longtime Supreme Court justice who attained near cult-like status among progressive circles, died Friday at the age of 87 from complications surrounding metastatic pancreas cancer.

The late Supreme Court Justice, who spent more than two decades on the bench in the highest court of the land, is survived by her two children, Jane Carol and James Steven Ginsburg.

Ginsburg, who was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 by President Bill Clinton, was known for her soft-spoken demeanor that masked an analytical mind, a deep concern for the rights of every American and a commitment to upholding the Constitution.

"She changed the way the Supreme Court views the issue, and she changed millions of people's lives in the process," said David Schizer, who served as a law clerk during Ginsburg's first year on the high court bench in 1993. "She did it with her soft-spoken, quiet manner. She understood if you're trying to do something momentous, you should present it as quite ordinary."

She had battled back from two forms of cancer in the past but her health began to take a downturn in December 2018 when she underwent a pulmonary lobectomy after two malignant nodules were discovered in the lower lobe of her left lung.

On Jan. 7, 2019, the Court announced she would miss oral arguments that day for the first time since she joined as she continued to recuperate from that surgery.

Me think there will be another Conservative Supreme Court Justice. lolol

    A conservative house
    A conservative senate
    A conservative president
    A conservative supreme court

    Possible Grand Slam? haha

#demexit #walkaway gee I wonder why there are no similar movements for the left.

The political chitstorm has already started and she isn't even in the ground.

Regardless of politics how many years she beat back cancer is amazing. Pancreatic usually takes people out first go round.

Sort of like Dick Cheney and his heart attacks.

    RIP

I am thinking the Democrat will start a new sex scandal for whoever Trump picks. The similar hoax they did to Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh

I predict a democratic house, Republican senate, Trump, and a very conservative Supreme Court.

This here, alone, shows what the democrats thought of her in the end. She lived a long full life, and she accomplished a lot in that lifetime. All to be turned into a political message almost before the world fully knows she passed. All for getting the seat filled quickly (Supreme Court will likely play a huge role in the end of this election hooplah) to ensure no split court decisions, but I'm not at all shocked Schumer demanded her seat be left vacant before even saying goodbye, for lack of a better term.

I smell 100 stinky reasons Dems will come up with ino order to NOT fill the vacancy. Cant blame them - they're skrewed. Kinda like Biden debating.. still dont think that's gonna happen, either. Just gotta find the perfect excuse to keep him in the basement. Covid19 maybe?? An intentional false-positive in the near future for Joe?

This is where the GOP should be focused, there are presumably 10 (R) seats on the balance this election, to include Lindsey Graham's.

The interesting thing to watch will be how unequivocally the Senate Republicans defend McConnell if he pursues confirmation within the next 45 days - Merrick Garland precedent anyone?

For reference, that first meme posted by Dano is taken from McConnell's quote...

Wouldn't the single stinky reason McConnel gave for not having hearings on Garland work? Does Fox News not mention this?
Here's what Mitch McConnell said about not filing a Supreme Court vacancy in an election year

I guess he changed his mind. People does it all the time. #demexit and #walkaway movements are full of people who changed their mind about the Democratic Party for example

In fact, now there is video — Where Barack Obama argued the US Constitution demanded the empty slot be filled immediately!
Barack Obama: The Constitution is pretty clear about what is supposed to happen now. When there is a vacancy on the Supreme Court, the President of the United States is to nominate someone. The Senate is to consider that nomination and either they disapprove that nominee or that nominee is elevated to the Supreme Court. Historically this has not been viewed as a question.

"So now I hear all this talk about the Biden rule. It's frankly ridiculous. There is no Biden rule," Biden said. "It doesn't exist. There's only one rule I ever followed on the Judiciary Committee; that was the Constitution's clear rule of the advice and consent. Article Two of the Constitution clearly states, whenever there is a vacancy in one of the Court's created by the Constitution itself, the Supreme Court of the United States, the president shall -- not may -- the president shall appoint someone to fill the vacancy with the advice and consent of the United States Senate. And advice and consent includes consulting and voting!" Biden shouted.
