I have been looking into going to the Coronado islands on my boat. I’ve been doing some research on the registration, insurance etc. However, I know that some of Mexico has some crime issues and I was wondering if anyone has had any issues while fishing the islands. Since the islands are somewhat isolated I was thinking it would easier for criminals to get away with robberies or kidnapping. I would only ever go down there with my friends. Has anyone had any issues with crime down there or am I just being paranoid?

The MX navy patrols that place all day, machine guns out.. doubt you will see too much criminal activity..

No crime that I’ve ever seen there, and I was down there at least a handful of times per week all summer there. The cartel has no reason to be fishing with the hundreds of SD boats at the islands.

The only crime that happens out there is boats stealing your fish, killing the bite and theft on the party boats.

Make sure you have all the proper documents.
    1. Mex fishing lic.
    2. FMM visa
    3. passport (needed to get FMM)
    4. Biosphere pass
    5. TIP- temporary import permit for boat
    6. In mexico you are supposed to have a radio operators lic as well...but I haven't been checked for this ever.

I carry all these docs and have been checked a couple of times in the past few years.
The mex military has been checking sporadically this spring. They will just send you home if you don't have all the proper docs. They supposedly take down your info and warn you not to return without getting paperworks squared away. However, I haven't heard of anyone being detained...but I don't want to be the first.
