I recently traveled near lexington, virginia for a family emergency and had a lot of time to fish around the area. i usually fish the bays on my kayak for spotties and halibut, so fishing in fast moving creeks and rivers was completely foreign. after about 3 outings getting skunked each time, i finally found a part of the maury river that had pockets of water holding fish (there was a recent rain storm).

i caught four smallmouth, all about that size with the biggest being no more than ten inches.
i then drove down to chattanooga to see more family, and tried the tennessee river 4F055B68-C186-4914-9741-6CE0595311D8.jpeg

i only fished there once, and never really figured out how the fishing works there in those big rivers.
we stayed in tennessee for about 3 days and now currently i have found myself just outside atlanta at lake lanier.

i skunked myself three days in a row until i hopped on a kayak and caught what looks like a spotted bass, but i really dont know for sure

caught it first cast on a senko, and didn’t have much action until i saw a big dark cloud approaching me 02148BD6-6D0C-4946-BDC4-FA8315562622.jpeg
pretty fun getting soaked like that haha

i am driving home from here, and my next stops include new orleans, texas, and maybe flagstaff, arizona. if anyone knows any cool spots they want to share in between houston and arizona it would be greatly appreciated.
i will keep posted on the rest of the fishing i do this trip

Don't ignore chunk bait... If you really want some pointers east of H town, I can help you, but you will have to think differently to take advantage of my advice. If you just want to just stick to lures, make fast friends with the cheap "flash" inline spinners at Walmart, they come in a five pack for about 6 bucks. Get both sizes, and HAMMER EVERY PIECE OF WATER YOU CAN FIND... Don't ignore roadside ditches, ponds and puddles with any kind of open water, even if it's only thirty feet across or just a few feet wide. I have pulled five foot gars out of areas very few guys would bother with. Those spinners will work on everything from yellow bass, stripers, and largemouth to redbreast sunfish, warmouths, fliers, and even gar. Those huge lakes and rivers have a lot of water to try to find fish in .. those small ones are a different thing
