I was sorting some pictures, deleting some where I had duplicates of the same fish. I was getting ready to delete one and realized that the two pictures were taken on different days, one on May 2nd and one on May 13th. I am pretty sure it is the same fish. It's not a particularly attractive bluegill, and I haven't shown it in any previous posts. It had the same bloody vent both times. I almost always release the larger bluegill, because it is good for the fishery, and there enough 9 and 10 inch models to take home to eat. With 20/20 hindsight I wonder if should have harvested this one if not the first time, then for sure the second time. I didn't realize at the time and must have just thought that there was another one still bloody from the spawn.

As I look at it again I wonder if maybe the blood is from barotrauma. It was probably over 25 feet deep. I had some issues with redear earlier in the year, but I don't recall any other problems with bluegill. I guess if it survived 11 days after the first time, it will survive again.

I just counted the vertical bars on each fish from "ear" to the last long bar and they are different numbers. Are the number of bars a permanent feature on a fish?

Edit: On a second take, they seem identical lol. Lighting was messin with me

I was wondering why I kept hearing Johnny Cash singing in my mind.

    "Burning ring of fire,
    That burning ring of fire!"
