San Diego and Grande that much better at finding the fish?

The title basically sums up a major question I’ve been wondering. I’m assuming all the H&M and seaforth boats fish the same general offshore area but I’ve been offshore fishing 3 times and skunked twice.

This is all opinion based and subjective, but I've been on the Grande a few times and every time the captain was radio'd by Ryan from the San Diego regarding the location of a school. I know Taro from the Liberty also does this, radio's out and calls other boats in to help. I'd almost say its The San Diego and the Liberty that are the "fishiest" boats, and yes they are that much better at setting up their drifts and putting you on fish. You also can't discount the crew, especially during these tuna runs, the deckhand that is chumming net fulls vs. the deckhand chumming cup fulls will be more successful at keeping the school around the boat. Top notch crews on both the Liberty and the San Diego, as well as the Grande. The fish are all over, its not so much a matter of finding them, but more of positioning the boat and setting everyone up for success. There are non better than the 3 boats mentioned above.

Thank you for the insight makes sense why they alway are doing better on the fish counts. Then in your opinion would booking 2 for the daiwa Pacifica or malihini worth it/ somewhat comparable to the experience I would have on any of those 3 boats(as they are all entirely booked when I’m free)?

Flip a coin haha, I haven't been on either. I will say I've heard rough things about the Malihini but I can't confirm. I'd personally wait until you are able to book a spot on The San Diego or The Liberty. Spots are available in early August. If I HAD to pick between the 2, I'd go Daiwa Pacifica.

When the fishing is good, the regular boats get filled up and then the "backup" boats come online. In my experience I have always been disappointed when I jump on one of the backups. The regulars are full for a reason. Fishing is fishing so you never know and if it is your only chance you may as well take it but if I'm going to drop 200 bucks I want it to be with the boat and crew that is out there everyday.

Agreed the Belle is good too. One thing to note is the fishermen that fish the San Diego tend to be fishier then other boats. That’s to say there are deadheads on it that can probably outfish you and I, so naturally their counts are better.

Pacifica has been doing great lately. I fished a 3/4 day with them, the crew seemed nice.

Didn’t see the sea watch had a few spots left and was able to get my spot for This Thursday. Hope they just follow the San Diego all day!

My uncle went yesterday on the Sea Watch & landed 2 bluefin and 3 yellowfin.

Practically any boat is good, you are the one fishing.

10-90 rule. 10% of the fisherman do 90% of the damage. Practice and experience will get you closer to the 10% where it doesn’t matter which boat you ride on. They’re all good

Yet there are a few boats/crews that are just that much more dialed in to give you better chances at that 10%...

I haven't been on all the boats, but for my money I would stick with one that goes offshore everyday, like the San Diego, Grande, liberty, mission belle. Some of the other boats do half day or 3/4 usually and start going offshore when the bite is good or demand is high. Not to say the other boats aren't good boats or crew, but when a boat specializes in offshore, that says something. I would also say the San Diego is my favorite boat. Both good points posted above, about the grade of fisherman on the SD and the importance of setting up drifts well.
Just got back from a Grande trip. Report incoming soon..

True. I was talking to a deckie on my trip sunday and bustin his balls about the San Diego doubling up on them.
and he told.. me the San Diego has "fisherman" and he is right.. the regulars on that boat can fish.
    I got mine Sunday..I had 3 tries
And it was a cluster on the boat with a bunch of yahoo wannabe or rookies. Loose lines everywhere, getting tangles and the guy is 10 spots upwind and still peeling out line and has no idea I have his line in my hand. That "guy"

a lot of "that guys" on some of the other boats.

that said.. Ryan and his crew.. bust *** and they catch fish and he is one fishy Capitan.
I'd fish the Pacifica any day of the week also. Same with the Tribute. Good capitans and crews.

Booked full weeks in advanced at 25$ higher than the other boats. The fisherman make the boat but the boat helps make the fisherman too. I feel like the captain and crew on the San Diego push the fisherman harder than some boats. When heading out there is always an energy on that boat like we are going out to war, to go kill fish. Mission belle has some of that too.

All I try and accomplish, other that catching fish, is to not be “that guy” and while I’m definitely not top 10% I’d give my self easy top half.

You will not meet a more psycho for pelagics group of deckhands then on the MB. I don't mean that in a bad way either, I mean they want you to get on fish. You want to go offshore in March for scattered bluefin schools, you bet they will get hyped. The San Diego has that too, part of the whole reason why they leave an hour early. I've known David H. (when he pinheaded and then worked on the DD) for a while and he's the nicest guy and you will ever meet, his ability to get dialed into customers is frankly amazing.
