Spending the week in San Jose for our anniversary. Got three marlin on Monday and a decent sierra . This morning my wife got another marlin, a 130lb thresher( surprise!) and a nice dorado. While she was on the marlin, a huge school of jack crevalle came through and I was able to land two. Those fish are badass. Great fishing for sure. We were out at the Gordo Banks, short boat ride from the marina.

C&R on the Marlin? Probably not! Is that Jack also called a GT? Looks like fun! Nice that your wife is game for such an adventure!

Best of luck. I had never caught marlin or crevalle before, all fish were caught on live mackerel and stand up tackle. Very sporting, my wife was impressing both me and the skippers!

Today’s marlin was kept. It was hooked on the lighter rod(40lb), my wife was on it for about an hour. It got tail wrapped at the boat and was too exhausted to survive. She is a champ for sure. The crevalle are cousins of the GT, fought very hard. I have seen video of guys land 50kg GTs on coral reefs, now that seems almost impossible!

That’s a great trip Galen. My dad and I pulled a 17’ Gregor down to Cabo years ago and got into those Jack Crevalle just a mile offshore while trolling Rapalas. My arms were fried after catching 5-6 of them. They are absolute bulldogs..

There were probably 20 boats at the bank, lots of life. Humpbacks cruising through, saw manta rays doing back flips! The skipper said there was far more bait than usual. Greenback mackerel and a fish very close to a spanish mackerel.
While my wife was on a marlin, I noticed a ton of surface activity about 100yds off. We drifted closer and I started seeing yellow, thought they were yellowtail. They were smashing a bait ball of baby flying fish. Skipper dropped a mackerel back and we got tight in under a minute.
When I got him up I managed one quick picture with the skipper holding the fish. My wife’s marlin was close so there wasn’t time to hand off a fish and pose! We put another bait in, bit again within a minute. The marlin had made another run so we were able to get a nice shot of the second one. When that fish was up and down, I would have thought it was a 50 lber, very strong.
