We arrived at the campground yesterday in the afternoon and got setup.
Went down to the beach this morning, the water looks great no seaweed. People on the beach and in the water but plenty of open spots to fish. Looked for sand crabs but didn't see any. We'll be leaving Tuesday morning so I hope to get some fishing in. Walking back up the bluff about did me in this morning. I won't take too much down to the beach when I go fishing. Camera battery died so no pictures yet.

So I went up to the rangers station and bought up all of the sites in our section. LOL

Tide was coming up so we gave fishing a try.
We used Gulp Camo Sandworms. Seaweed was bad this time, about every third cast I got some.
We fished about two hours, water is really warm.
Nothing, but I did have one hit.
Found some super small sand crabs about the size of a pin head. I got snagged on something so I grabbed the line and pulled it free. This sand crab was on the hook when I reeled in the line.
Does it count for not getting skunked?
You can see that the beach is pretty empty.
I was fishing a little trough area when this mother and four teenager boys set their blanket to the side of me and went into the water right next to me. I told the mother that the beach is pretty much empty and these kids are right in front of me. She said sorry, that's when I called it quits. In one of the pictures you can see where was a rock slide.

Good luck larry . I have never fished there myself but have wanted to . Looks like good shallow water structure all along there especially on the southern half looking at the G E Sat. Photos . Try some spoons or plugs an hour or two before and after low water . Might just end up with a good dinner . Tight lines !

Try a rig that keeps the bait just off the bottom and an aberdeen type hook that is straight and conforms to the body of the sand worm

Back home. I probably should of put this thread in the Lounge.
I gave fishing one more try. I used a small Rapala lure but no luck. It felt good just standing in the water. It's really warm.
First time using our trailer, used but new to us.
So it was our shakedown cruise.
Here's some pictures of the campground in case someone might want to camp there. You don't need a RV, tents are ok in the same parking area.
The pictures are of the camp sites, restrooms, dish washing area, and outside showers.
It was a fun trip overall.

Did you have to reserve way in advance or did you just take a shot at a walk up ? Looks like it would be fun . Thanks for the report .

It takes quite awhile for weekends. Wife made the reservation 6 months in advance.
    ReserveAmerica.com.
    It's probably quicker on weekdays.
Check out time is noon, in the picture on Sunday you can see the empty sites when everyone left.
On Monday some people arrived in our section. Check in time is 2pm. We left today, Tuesday, and only three of the spaces in our section had tent campers in them. As we drove out there were lots of empty spaces left along the way.
Weekdays would be your best times. We made the reservation for the weekend so that our son could go. He was a no show, next time we will do the weekday reservation.
The hike down to the beach is like Blacks Beach.
But it's a wide road so that to park rangers can drive down, not as difficult as Blacks Beach.
Here's a picture of the road at the bottom.

Restrooms could be cleaned more frequently, but not too bad.
Each campsite has a fire ring also.

san_montte3.jpg san_montte3.jpg abosworth-9784.jpg The next exit north has another portion of the state park system with a better campgrounds (San Mateo). The restrooms there are cleaned everyday and have hot showers on the token system. There is also a dirt path that will take you to Trestles from the campground (about a 2 mile walk). The receipt is also good for entry to the beach trailhead parking at San Onofre. The campsites have a little privacy with trees that surround the sites and are on dirt pads with paved parking.
