Well, my youngest son finally goes back to work next week and we had been talking about going Bass fishing all summer. He was raised on Harbor fishing and never really had a chance to chase LMB. I didn't start til about a decade ago. The last time I took him out he got into a dusk wide open Buster bite at El Cap. He caught 13 fish that day! So I thought we would give it another try. One problem... El Cap is closed on Thursdays! Ever try to turn a boat around at that gate? Not fun!
We got to the gate at San V before it was open! Not my favorite lake because I seem to have a problem catching fish in such clear water! We started down a shoreline, me throwing a Gunfish, him a Senko. We both caught a couple small fish... the stripe is off! Then we noticed some busters out in open water. We chased them for a couple hours with some success. I think we left with 8 or 9 between us. Beats nothing any day! He got his new LMB PB! A three pounder! Any of you remember your first three?

That is what I said. There were some nice ones rolling on the bait. The bait was 2-3 inches and did not look like shad.

You did better than we did. I was there at open in the aluminum tracker w my wife. We could only stay til 9am, so super fast session. We fished an area I had got em good last week. My wife only got 2 on the fluke, about 2 lbers. I was set on throwing frogs and top water and got the skunk. I didn't see a buster until it was time to leave. Nice to hear they finally came up.
How do you even turn a boat around on that road at El Cap? That sucks! That 300 foot drop on the side of the road doesn't help! haha!

There is a place about 80 yards from the gate where the tire marks show many a rig has turned around. It was dark and I did not fancy backing that far. So I unhooked the trailer and spun it around. I three point turned my Suburban. As I said, not fun!

Looks like a fun time at the lake with your son. I always remember some of the fun days fishing with my father.
Let's see...my first 3 was either at Miramar, Henshaw or at the San Diego River. I actually do not remember, but do know that Creme plastic worms were the bait of choice way, way, way back then.
Anyway...great post and thanks for sharing. :)

My first three was in Texas when my family was visiting relatives. I was fishing a Country Club pond and an errant cast landed my Rebel on a mat of vegetation. When I pulled it off of the mat the water exploded! I took it home and my Mamma (texan for grandma) cooked it for me.

Sorry you had that Otay turnaround Paul. Way to go by heading to San V. I'll bet your son is thrilled with his PB. Just because he's going back to work, doesn't mean you can't fish with him on Weekends?? Anyway, thanks for the report. I know Sutherland is closed today, glad you got out to the Vee and caught some!!

Good thing you had your son with you. It would suck doing that solo, in the dark. I would have just waited 24 hours until they open the next day. HAHA!

I was in the process when he showed up in his own car. I was really glad to see him as the boat was having its way with me! Definitely a two-man job!

How did you put up with that 30ft loud obnoxious piece of ——- boat running around the lake with no muffle of any kind. I was pounding the shore until about 10:30 for 13 fish, trying to keep my balance from the wakes of the sky boats. Be so glad when oct ends, wishing my life away. Monday’s are sooo peaceful

My first biggie was 194 pounds. I was 16 yrs old at YMCA Summer Camp in Texas and throwing a Heddon Chugger when, all of a sudden, BANG! something big was hooked. It was my right ear lobe. My rod was a "SilaFlex" spinning rod and way too limber...

Yep....2 lbs 15 oz on a Creme purple 4 inch worm fly lined from shore at Murray when I was 12....50 years ago o: That's when Murray only had tullies in the middle of the coves and not on the shoreline. You also couldn't have a motor larger than 10hp....times have changed.
