How long will sand crabs last after being caught. Can I put them in the fried or a few days?

Overnight max, that’s if you constantly give them a couple squeezes of fresh saltwater and change the storage container otherwise they will die from their own urine

I put them in a colander on top of a plate with a paper towel. Put a wet paper towel on top of them, then put them in the fridge. Two days and they were still kicking.

I think the key is to keep them out of their urine and keep them moist and cool.

I have kept them for up to 5 hours dry in a can on my hip while I fish. For overnight/The fridge is really a little too cold for them. IMO best set up in a container with damp newspaper on the bottom, a damp towel or two on top of them, in one end of an ice chest with a frozen water bottle at the other end. Should make it overnight for when you’ve got an early morning shore pounders :emoji_relaxed:

I kept some overnight this summer and they lasted fine with the following steps:

Put them in a plastic sand strainer toy (with a 1-2 inch lip), then put the strainer on top of a ziploc bag of ice in a small plastic tub.

The strainer allows their urine to pass through the holes and the ice keeps them cool enough as they melt. The hard shell crabs seemed to survive better than soft shells.
