Fished all over Point Loma yesterday.
Wanted to end the day fishing the kelp line for whatever wanted to bite.

Saw a school of some weird looking fish come under the boat, casted a double tube bait rig I had set up, and my buddy threw his spoon. Had a double hook up but one popped off, and my buddy was hooked up as well almost instantly.

pulled out a handful of triggers in minutes.

eventually they disappeared, but the stoke was real. Never seen something like that happen right here in SD, and don’t know if I ever will again.

Agreed. Couldn’t imagine getting one on the fly. Would be an epic fight.

Wish I wasn’t in the middle of a tournament, and with no ice, or else they would have made their way into my kitchen for sure.

I heard that as long as you have a sharp knife it’s not too bad. Their skin felt pretty tough

Fine scale Trigger - believe it or not, they are native here and fairly common, though rarely caught.

That’s cool to know. Whatever was going on under the boat put them in a feeding frenzy and they wanted to bite anything they could find. Surprised they don’t get caught more around here.

I’ve caught one big one south of the MB jetties on my kayak. Great fight for the size, and delicious. Hard to find though. I’m really hoping to get in to some during my Baja Trip next month. Cleaning them really isn’t hard. Just start by stabbing through the skin and cutting from the inside out. Once you do that, fillet as usual.

Commercial Lobster pots, (chum) and inside the kelp, (structure), sounds a lot like a recipe for success.
