Fished with my dad on Sunday. Fished smelt and anchovies all day. There were tons of chovies around the pier, and you can catch them with a small sabiki rig jigging it up and down slowly.. My dad only caught spotties, some were nice sized. I ended the day with spotties, 4 short halibut (largest being 20.5"), some mackerel, and 2 corvina (one popped of at the shoreline). All vinas were released. We both lost quite a few fish, and I think a couple were halibut. One that I hooked felt like a legal. Hopefully I can get one last legal before I leave for school next Friday.

Nick you and your pops are killers. Hope to run into you two one day and pick your brain. I've been cruising by the area on my way to work some days. Kinda put off by the amount of people I see fishing. Parking also always sucks lol.

How are you rigging the live smelt?

Thanks, and yeah sometimes the amount of people fishing gets a little crazy, especially on weekends. I do wish there was better parking. The only place with a decent amount is the little park, but that means everyone chooses to fish there.

Carolina rig. 12lb leader, 2oz weight, and usually I'm fishing a 2/0 hook, but if the bait is small then I'll drop to a smaller size.

You whipping them out far? or in close. When i try to send them far, I keep ripping them off on the cast

I never really have a problem getting them out far if I have to. Only thing I notice is that the smelt tend to die a little faster, probably from the extra force it takes to cast. Usually I'm not casting very far, unless I feel like the fish aren't close to shore.
