Sad news to report but there was a contaminate, like sewage maybe, spilled into the River at the Fashion Valley pedestrian bridge. Most of the the fish have died-off and the few remaining large fish were struggling, swimming upstream into a side tributary. Crayfish and turtles were on the surface sucking air. Judging from the discoloration and decomposition of the fish, this may have occurred late Wednesday or Thursday. The waters downstream in the golf course may beginning showing die-off soon if they haven't already.
I called the City of SD and reported it this afternoon.

And now for some better news: I managed to get on a nice one throwing a frog on Wednesday elsewhere on the river. Plus, caught one on a Keitech 3" swimbait, AND, my first Gika rig fish. The cream on the cake was also finding a lure in a tree.
Still sucks about all those fishing dying though because it will take a long time for that population to rebuild itself.
I'm depressed about this and will have to spend tomorrow throwing the frog in honor of all those finned friends I've lost.
    Fishing is my therapy!!

The river has had eutrophic problems for decades, the fish bounce right back. It a dynamic fishery. Nice fish

I’ve done a similar setup like you have and have tried a blade with no swivel and the weight banging the blade, is there a name that setup is called?

Been a problem for the SDR for a long time. Lots of caniform and coliform bacteria, fert runoff etc, combined with very low summer flows (probably exacerbated by watering restrictions), means that HABs causing eutrophication problems aren't going anywhere anytime soon for that place.

That sucks! Glad you are ok.
That is one of the reasons I do not fish it that often. There are a few crazies out east mostly on one side along the river. Been pretty lucky over the years but through the years it is not getting any better. Most of the homeless are probably harmless but some are drugged out or just crazy and you never know what state of mind they are in. One time last year there was a guy screaming tons of curse words at someone and then seemed to be getting closer and when when a few rocks hit the water....not too close to me...but close enough to move me along quickly down to another area of the river. You always need to be on alert and checking out your surroundings fishing the river these days. I would never fish down there after dark unless I had a few buddies with me or was packing heat.

I'm sure that a couple thousand homeless people taking dumps in the River doesn't affect the water quality at all......! The City is doing a great job with the homeless situation..not! Somebody needs to take Toad Gloria down to the River to spend the weekend. You got a pretty mouth boy....! I bet the homeless can't wait for that new Riverpark to be completed!

The Gika or Jika rig. I've seen it spelled both ways. It got me 4 fish yesterday when nothing would hit the frog.

Agree, don't do dark hours down there. Seen all kinds of craziness; too close to CMH and after their 72 hour hold they run to the river to shout at their demons. Those are the most dangerous. And if I was packing and hurt someone, it would probably result in me getting in trouble with the law since you legally can't carry a loaded firearm. Best advice is do like you and stay away from that area.

I only fished there a couple times but this happening to me once was enough to make me stop. I live right off the river two so it's a shame.

It's a huge shame...can't use our parks and nature areas because the politicians have let the scum bags take them over! It's going to hit the fan when they build the river park and the picnickers start getting stabbed by the river derelicts!

Yes, some visually impaired pedestrian was stabbed a few weeks ago near the Staples store. Then some good samiritans tried to help and they got injured too. Did see a heavy police presence and camp clearing last Wednesday near the Hazard Ctr., cops had some guy in cuffs. It's like playing wack-a-mole for the cops.
