Been trying for some bigger sharks and rays recently with no luck. I'm using wire leader, haywire to a big circle hook on a fish finder rig. My question is where should I be focusing efforts? Are they in the bay or the beach? Got some perch and mack for bait, should I paddle out to a drop off and drop it with a kayak in the bay?
Any advice would help, thank you!

If you really want to improve, make an account on there, talk to some of the guys, and come to the bat ray tournament in march, called bat fight. Top place to pick up intel.

Fresh fresh fresh bait, a day old frozen bait is not fresh to me.
Where will the bat fight be hosted at?

The way bat fight works is its four counties in socal, SD, Orange county, LA, and ventura. You can fish anywhere in those countys for bat rays, which is the target. There are some rules which you can find on prehistoricsoul.com (ill post the link when I find it.) Usually most of the SD guys decide where to go the weekend before and it will be put up on the websight. The last few years it has been on fiesta island but like I said, anywhere in SD county is fair game.
    Edit: Rules
    The Rules:

-The only fish that counts toward the ultimate winner is Myliobatis californica… aka the Bat Ray. All other species will only count as individual bragging rights.

-Widest wingspan measured over the top of the Ray (Taut Tape) with corresponding pictures. No loose or flat laying tape on the entire body and wings. (loose tapes will be prone to losing some inches)

-CPR only (no gaffs or landing tools that cause direct injury to the fish)

    - The main area for each county will be picked by the Team Captain and any satellite groups must make sure they post their results by the given time.

-Shore Fishing Only from the Surf or Bay. No kayaked baits, shore casting only.

-You can fish in any county you’d like, but the fish you catch will be recorded for the county you caught the fish in. If you are from LA fishing in SD, the bat will count for SD.

-Start time for the event is very dependent on when you want to get out and fish. The opening gun will sound at 6:00am on the day of the tournament and will end at 11:59 that night. This is just the window of time that the tournament will count for any bat rays. This will allow people who work or have prior engagements to get out and participate in the event in a generous time window.

-Photos must be posted by no later than (end of tourny). Any Photos posted later than that time will be disqualified from their entry. (So be VERY time conscience)

-This is a picture/honor system, please no fudging or cheating. A few times now, the winner won by a half an inch. This made for a great photo finish and great trash talking.

-Everyone is required to have a good time!

Cannonball rig 5oz egg to a 7/0 Aki twist straight 40 or 40 fresh Mac or red line from tuna. Bowling pins at fiesta, 3 amigos at coranado, East end of harbor, and ski beach are some of my usual haunts these areas will produce both Leo's and some big big big batties

No need to yak your baits out, especially in the bay. I'll send you a cheat sheet that Ive sent to others to help get them on mud marlin. From now till early April is the prime time for the bigger models. In the last 2 weeks I've gotten over a dozen 48" and bigger. Best advice use the freshest bait you can get. I'll be out at Mission bay on Wednesday after work for a session. If your free hit me up and come along. Ive got enough gear to arm a few guys lol. I'll get you that cheat sheet in the morning. Also incoming tide at night peaking g between. 9PM and 1AM has consistently been the best with a good amount of current and dont forget to chum
