Im going fishing for shark soon from a pier and Im no 100% sure what I should use. I have some knowledge that others have given to me but wanted to come and ask here. The reel Ill be using is a Daiwa Sealine 50 HV and the rods im trying to decide on are a Phenix Axis 9 foot 30-80, A CalStar 90j 30-60 and a smaller 6 foot Shakespeare Ugly Stik Black Tiger. Which rod should I use?

Catch and release until I know how to properly fillet a shark.

Take a big strong hoop net , Tough cutting them off or hand lining . If you were going to take one , a pier gaff . You have the rail in your favor so on the fight , take the one that fits on the rail with the reel where it operates easiest . One of my most memorable trips was as a teen was at Crystal pier . 6 ft Thresher . Good luck . WR

Does it matter if I have a long or short rod? Im not sure if using 9 foot will give me not enough leverage over the fish

Shorter is better in this case I think... Releasing a shark from that pier in particular is not that easy of a proposal because of the hotel, otherwise you could beach the thing for an easier release. If you do a kill, make sure you bleed the smiler immediately and hang it up. I like to cut the front into steaks and fillet after the ribs.

If you can sit on the butt of the rod so to speak , any of them will work and casting distance probably won't be an issue . The six footer may be a little short , the parabola of the fighting section of the rod may get pinched on the rail you could break it .The others should do alright particularly if the front grip sits on the rail in a good position . Have fun with it hope to see a good report . WR.

Release might be tricky, don't want to be chucking a shark off of the edge of a pier lol

And before someone states it... I was not suggesting a four foot rod or or whatever.. someone will say it for sure.. I would personally choose something in the 7 foot range instead of 12.. just saying

go to OB pier all the way to the end then turn left. that's where the pier rats hang out. they are hardcore sharks / rays fishermen. you can learn a lot by watching them.

They are a motley crew, drinking, smoking, and just being a bit edgy.

12 foot would be a rough fight lol. I decided on using my Axis 9 foot because its got really good backbone.

Also, I know you probably know this but juvenile Great Whites are protected, don’t be like that kid up in Oceanside who killed one and took a bunch of photos.
