I made a last minute trip from Az with my 6year old son battling Leukemia to get away for a few days. This kid is crazy about fishing and there is nothing he would rather do!! Was wondering if we could get an update from a few of you or point us in the right direction for some shore or pier fishing. I know it's a little early for shark fishing but if anyone has any new reports on them too. Chartering a boat isn't in the budget. We are also interested in some freshwater fishing and can travel some if needed. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

If you are around Sunday I can take you and your son out on Mission Bay for a few hours free of charge. We can get a few fish on the line for him to reel in for sure. I have a young daughter of my own, and always love helping kids get on fish. PM me if you are interested, anytime Sunday works for me really.

Shark fishing is about putting in the time.. get mackerel or squid for bait and fish any pier in as deep water as possible or channels of the bays.

    Gear:
Reel - 15 to 30 size conventional or 5-8000 spinner 300 yards of min. 40lb braid and a 100yrd topshot of 30-50lb mono
    Leader: 50-80 mono or steel
Hooks: 5/0-8/0 cirlce or J hooks X3 strong
Rod 6-7 MD HVY- HVY 20-50lb line 2-8oz. sinkers
    Sinkers: minimum 4 oz. - 8 oz.
Rig: Carolina, dropper, or 3 way swivel
    Plan:

Get as fresh bait as possbie 1 best is mackerel or bonito heads, followed by squid and then sardines or anchovy. Set up in deep water in the bays, channels, basins etc. ..... leave reel in freespool with clicker on..... when the shark or ray hits let it run for 5-10 seconds to eat the bait and then set the hook hard.

    Good luck.

any pier really, its really a matter of putting your time in and can be hit or miss. Focus on fishing the deeper water near the ends of piers or channels in the bays.

IB if you like sculpin and thornbacks and the occasional syringe on the ground, OB if you like to accidentally hook spiny lobster and don't mind wacky people, SI if you like catching Mack's, Emb if you feel like getting jumped, Jst if you feel like getting chased away precisely at 10:30pm, PP if you like skunks, Crystal pier if you rent a place is super active at night, OS if you're looking for trouble.
