I fished for about 1.5 hours this morning on the same beach from the 6/4 thread that doesn't allow sand crabs. If you didn't read the other thread, I found out that you can't fish sand crabs on this beach (even if harvested at another beach), so I'm testing some alternative baits. I decided to test shrimp chunks today.

Tide conditions were quite different today than 6/4, so this isn't apples to apples. 6/4, we fished starting at the high tide (3.5') until about 3 hrs past high (2.3'). Today, I fished starting at a 1' tide and finished at a 2.5'. Most of my action was around 1.5-2' today.

    6/4 - 7 YFC, 1 ray in 3 hrs (2.67 fish/hr)
    Today - 3 YFC, 2 BSP, 1 ray in 1.5 hrs (4 fish/hr)

Fish sizes were similar. I was worried that shrimp would have the tendency to bring in more rays, but it didn't. Instead, it brought in more perch. Granted, this is a sample size of 1, and I wasn't comparing baits on the same line (or even the same day), so I'm pulling conclusions out of my rear end.

Any SMCA that doesn't allow take of crustaceans. Doubt anyone can prove you didn't get them at another location unless they see you digging for them. You could always dump your pockets if you see dfg rolling up.

The stretch of beach from Seaside to Cardiff.

I c-rigged the shrimp pieces just like you'd do for sand crab, etc. 3/4 oz, SS egg sinker, 12" leader.

True, however, after seeing how well shrimp performed, I don't see the need to risk it. I went through 2 shrimp today. This was from a 3 lb batch of shrimp I bought from El Super about 4 months ago for 2.99/lb ... lol. I cut them up at home, so each shrimp is about 5 pieces.

I also found the shrimp had a vastly superior hookset ratio. Still, I prefer the ease of using sand crabs (bait at your feet), so I'll keep using them on the beaches that allow it.

Shrimp is extremely versatile as a bait choice. Extremely money and time efficient if used in small pieces as well...

Can always harvest from elsewhere and boil them per the details in this thread posted by Larry M
    Sand crabs

My follow on advice would be to divide them in small batches and keep in vacuum sealed bags.

Just kidding. This community of anglers is rad. Been sharing shoreline and docks with a handful of new faces from SDFsh and it’s ALWAYS a good time. Sharing lures, tips and stories. Cool group of people. I try to get as many people as I can to join. Prob not the thread for it but if you don’t like it then… alright.
