Had the goal to get meat in the freezer for this trip so the main target was rockfish.

A couple hours into our session Kam hooked into a solid fish, and was instantly broken off. A few minutes after that a Mako decided to ram the side of the boat. The shark then turned back around and taunted us by doing circle after circle right under the boat. A solid 5- 10 minutes went by, and with no luck to shoo it away we decided to make a cast at it. Dropped a tube bait in the water, he attacked it, and instantly snapped me off. Decided to throw an iron on to get a little buffer between hook and line, and watched the shark charge and bite the iron. Gaffed and boated- we accomplished our goal of putting meat in the freezer.

Shark is never my target species, and being someone who loves to surf, feel as though killing a shark produces some bad luck for future surfing trips. But the way this shark was acting had me question it’s health overall. With multiple attempts to get it to leave us alone, and with no reason for it to be acting in the manner it was acting, I felt as though it was ok to harvest this one. Kam did an awesome steak job, and I’m stoked to give shark a try!

There have been many reports of Makos in our local waters right now with many anglers getting on them. Within the last 3 or so trips I have boated around 5-7 of them. Not sure why they are running thick around here right now, but they are beautiful fish, and fun to catch!

Mako sharks are very good for the table. Enjoy you meals.
Did the Mako jump? Most of them do.

Had one on us Saturday breached on a red I was pulling up just to feed it as it flung off the hook and back in the water while trying to lip it. That's awesome you got one. We watched it demolish the red feet under the boat. Totally natgeo style shortly there after landed my biggest local moose yellow in years. I'm glad the shark didn't take it.

Honestly there real thick right now I almost can not; not find them. It's just getting them to eat. Like you said there's so much bait in the water. It's crazy. It had 3 of thoes jumbo deans in it stomach the one that are all over the jetty right now. It's could easily eat a full size CD 20 rapala deep diver if it wanted to. There all out on that ridge...you know the one! As your out there and the bait balls are all over the surface don't waste your time fishing them. Wait till you see the ones that pop up out of no where for a minute or two. That's the bait ball you want to target I've gotten 2 out there recently and lost more. I'm still waiting on that dame bonito to show. GL!! I'm going to get me a shark this week!! That's my goal!

Years ago I went out on a shark fishing boat it was nighttime fishing right outside the entry to the harbor they ground fish up in a meat grinder shining lights on the water about 15 anglers we all caught at least two my biggest Mako was 90lb’s my friend caught a 120lber it was an amazing trip learned so much that trip the captain looked like a piece of leather that had been left out in the desert for years he went by Captain Jaws, anybody ever heard of him I wonder if he’s still around?
Amazing to think how many sharks are out there, it was wide open fishing right outside the entrance.

There’s a ton of Makos out over the interpelagic zones of Point Loma and La Jolla. My big thing is making sure the one I get is worth my time to fillet, which it never is.

Thankfully Kam_Walsh98 filleted it, and his time is not that valuable at all.
