If those were my catches I'd be saying I had an epic year so far. Nice going.

I am actually pretty disappointed with my year. I have lost some horses out there. And that hurts a lot lol. Had one this weekend rip the drag off my reel almost spool me and pop off after 90 seconds. Thats what pain feels like

Whatever disappointments you had were temporary until you landed your next good fish. I'd say you're having an outstanding season in my book.

Very nice catches. Seems you use swimbait most of the time?
What rod do you use? From the first picture the rod seems rather short (or maybe it is a giant corbina). Can you cast far with it?

Thanks. That is not a Corbina. Yes, everything is caught on the swimbait. My rod is a 7' medium and I use 30# braid. I can cast pretty far :)

Wait a minute! Could this be the one and only “I’M ON THE DOORMAT!” ?!?! Dude, you are my hero!!!

After watching those clips, it got me motivated to ditch the Halis for a bit and target some WSB instead! Thanks for the motivation!

    Hello Marty,
    You've significantly peaked my interest.
1st, is "I'M ON THE DOORMAT!" a YouTube channel or something similar, on how to target WSB?
2nd, how does one target WSB, as opposed to hali? What are the differences in tackle, approach and waters one targets? It looks like you're throwing LC's. Don't a lot of people use those to target hali?
Those are very pretty fish! I have been lead to believe that they are rare in the surf.
Seems like you've got them dialed in. Nice job!

He is referring to.a youtube video with me yelling in the background as my buddy hooks a fish lol.
White seabass are common in the surf but they are related to specific structure just like any other fish. Do you catch sandbass, cabezon, opaleye in the same places you catch beans croaker perch? Not really.

    Thanks man.
Mystery solved. I have a lot to learn about the North County surf fishery. I'll stat my hand on, in person research this Sept.
    Best regards!

I’m still figuring it out but there seems to a handful specific conditions that will increase the chances of WSB (time of day, specific structure, time of year, etc.)

other than that, halibut can be be caught in very similar habitats with similar tackle.

part of the fun was just getting out there and trying different things, skunking over and over and then finally seeing it all come together.

now just need to find a legal! I was .5” short on Sunday :(
