Moved here recently and still getting use to the regulations. Caught an 11in spotty bass earlier and quickly looked up the minimum size.

It says "the minimum size limit is 14 inches total length or 10 inches alternate length."

Didn't know how to interpret that so I threw it back.

Can anyone explain what an alternate length is? Thanks.

Alternate length is the straight-line distance from the base of the foremost spine of the first dorsal fin to the end of the longest lobe of the tail (California Code of Regulations Title 14, Section 1.62).

Just a suggestion, not worth eating. Stick with calicos. Even sandbass are bleh. IMO

I actually prefer sandbass to calico to eat, but spotties are definitely not worth eating. Throw them back if alive for sure

I'm never surprised any longer when a Spotty bites my hook. it seems like that is all there is. A occasional halibut is always a bonus. Fun fun fun.
