    Happy 2022 all!
Fresh out of Covid Jail and headed to the bay for some spotties and fresh air. Hit Mission Bay at first light and was able to find the spotties pretty soon after launch. I was fishing near the Mission Bay Yacht Club using some 2 inch curly tail grubs (orangish color) on 6lb test from the Robotube. I ended up fishing a 4” Gulp Minnow (smelt color) also and switched back and forth throughout the trip. Both were on 1/8oz chartreuse jig head. I threw other baits as well with no success.

The bites were pretty subtle except for the very first one that nailed the bait. I worked an outgoing tide with a pretty slow retrieve and a jig and twitch presentation. The baits were worked about a foot off of the eel grass in about 10ft of water. I managed several in the 13-14” range which was nice on the light rig. I was on the water about 3 hours and managed to land 20 fish so all around it was a great day.

If you want more details as well as the beer tasting for the day check out the video in the link.

I am excited for the new year of fishing. Cheers and tight lines to all.
    Chris

Small curly tail grubs are underappreciated. Lately it seems like when I have downsized to get short striking spotties or smelt, some dumb legal halibut decides he wants a 2" grub.

I would need to get some waders with a zipper if I am going to drink beer on the water though. Got to have waders to stay warm but takes too long to take the jacket off and roll them down just to pee.

Thanks man. I figured a special apparatus for easy waste removal. But I agree for sure the big fish love the small baits.

Thanks for the report - what's a Robotube?

I did a video about it here if you want more information about what I made and how it works.

Great vid! love the experimentation. "Is the bait or the spot?" I always try that too. Would catch more if I didn't but it's always fun learning.

Totally correct on the size thing. It’s always fun to get a legal halibut on 6lb test and a tiny bait.

Thanks and yup! Always trying stuff. It’s always in my mind when I’m on a good bite to try a different lure retrieve or technique to see what’s what. It has gotten me to lose the bite in the past but always has the possibility of gaining confidence in something new.

Might catch more in the short run but experimentation and subsequent learning yields more fish in the long run.

I agree on the 6lb - I tube both bays and use 6lb for leaders (I am a flyfisher) - feel like I get bit more and it makes the bruisers a bit more interesting - don't get a lot of swallowed baits anyway, so that may also help
