Yep. Another good panfish day at San Vicente. Very close to the same good day I had last time out. I caught 26 redear, 5 bluegill, and two bass today. All fish were released. The big difference is the ratio of redear to bluegill. It was just the opposite last time. I did take some pictures, but since pictures don't seem to do them justice, I just took pictures of the more colorful ones. My wife likes those best anyway. More about her later. Some very nice fish today, but unlike the other days this year, there were also some 8" and 10" fish. Str8t Slabaronies and I were commenting just last week that we would like to see some smaller fish in the mix to know there were some coming on to replace the bruisers we have been catching. They were in the 18' to 22' range today. The bass came at the end after the sun came out. I suspect they were on the edge earlier. One of the bass was 3.25 lbs. I was off the water by 11:45. I mentioned my wife before. She is my rock. She keeps me grounded and gets me back on track when I wander off course. As always she had some very practical advice for this trip. "If you are going to take any of those selfies, you need to trim your nose hair."

    These bluegill had nice colors.

Redear have nice colors as well.

    Bass not so much.

I believe this is the largest redear I have caught so far this year.It was 13" and weighed 2 lbs 2 oz. I caught a 14" one last week, but it was not as thick.

Should have made that clearer. They were 18 to 22 feet deep.

Funny, you wrote feet (') but, I also read inches! Fishermen even stretch things in their imaginations.

Not all common names make the most sense... I guess they do spend a lot of time laying on the surface in the sun. Have seen them go airborne before too, a big one makes a heck of a splash... And leaves a bunch of parasites in the water after it lands.. think they might use the sun for the same reason

Very Nice! You should give Otay a shot for them too. No one fishing for them except the Ospreys.

    Wow...

About as good as it gets for the Bullgills Larry. Sunday dinner plate size.

I know you want even bigger but those are indeed already Trophy size for sure!

Thanks, Roy. Believe me, I certainly appreciate the quality of the panfish we have here. But I do want one of those giants, and I realize there won't be that many more years to do it. I have spent 75+ years fishing and most of that time a 1 lb bluegill would be special, and 1.5 lb would be something to brag about. I just read a press release about a potential new state bluegill record in Louisiana where I fished many years. The new record is 1.83 lbs. I catch some bigger than that almost every time out. And just look at those 3+ lb crappie you have been catching the past couple of years. We live in panfish paradise and hardly anyone bothers with anything other than bass.

Havasu cranked out another WR RE at 6.30 lbs this week....those genetics are sprinkled in a few SoCal lakes of which San V is included. One benefit of excessive C&R of bass is they keep the BG/RE from overpopulating and foster trophy panfish growth.
