I haven't yet seen a thread like this yet, and I've been thinking back to a few, shall we say...unique...people I've come across while fishing. Tell some stories! What's one conversation/interaction you had that just made you scratch your head in confusion, or shake it wonder?
I'll start: at Oside Pier, I had an intoxicated gentleman become my best friend (or so he declared, loudly, multiple times) at about 5:30 am. A working girl offered her services "since you handle that there pole so damn good!" as I walked from the surf to the lot. Nothing else especially weird aside from crazy PETA- esque folks. But I know y'all have a lot more experience than this greenhorn so I'm curious;)

A story I have told often enough. . hooked a big calico in the dark, hook turned mid fight and killed her. So I haul an 11+ lb model on board (what am I going to do with that much low grade meat, right? ). . Some lobster fisherman charges up on me close and starts yelling.. Told the guy off and pointed out that the bass was dead when I caught it. Guy pulls out a pretty menacing looking revolver in the hand that wasn't holding the spotlight in my face, I call him some names, stand up and tellhim to pull the trigger. Coward backed off me, they pulled their traps and headed north, about it.. Lok

Years ago a I decided to get to OB Pier early to try to improve my luck. Got there when the street lights were still on, but plenty of grey light. As I approached the pier from the street, I could see what seemed like a homeless guy sitting on the bench being serviced by a woman kneeling between his legs. I have my headphones one listening to music and look back down thinking I must be wrong with what I saw. As I get closer, I look up again to what I saw to try to confirm I was wrong, but the woman stood up, leaned over the railing to empty the contents of her mouth and or stomach - great, just what I want to see so early in the morning. I continue walking down the pier wondering if I was dreaming or what... Not too much further down the pier, this woman who was servicing the guy, approached me and said "wanna talk?" - I pointed to my headphones and shrugged as if I didn't know what she said. She definitely fit the homeless appearance. Yeech. Scene forever ingrained in my memory.

Back in the 70's me and my best friend were fishing on the OB pier and we heard a bunch of yelling toward the end of the Pier. we ran down to see what was happening and everybody was pointing down to the water. We looked down and there was a body floating in the water! It was a male with only a pair of jeans on and you could see the flesh hanging off his limbs. He had been in the water for some time. The lifeguards came out and picked him up. pretty creepy!

I caught a pair of lacy thong underwear in the SD River one time. Fought pretty good for a sec. They bite on rattle traps.

Reminds me of one time we were fishing skinner. The stripers were chewing top water. We saw a school of big fish pushing alot of water a few hundred yards away. We gun up on them and my buddy and I instantly hook up. Better grade 6 to 10 pound fish. We were fighting our fish to the boat and a guy in his 1980s bright yellow boat pulls up about 5 ft away, between us and our hooked fish. We start yelling at him to move. He just looked at us and said "what are you using"? Me and my friends faces are now red as he is literally parked over our line we are only in maybe 5 to 7 ft of water. My buddy told him what we were using he told us he never catches anything on those. My buddy told him that was because he suck and I gave him a few choice words along with telling him to move his boat. He did and left angry. About 2 hours later a sheriff helicopter is circling and the Rangers were out in force. One of the Rangers came by we flagged him down and asked what was going on. I guess we got lucky because the same guy we had chewed out pulled a gun on another guy an hour later. After that I'm a little less verbally abusive.

In my early days of kayak fishing, I tried (and still am) a good sea goer regarding floating trash. If I see something floating I'll usually put in a fair effort to pick it up and stow it away to throw out when I get to the beach or home. This one day I saw a paper cup floating by, it was green, like a gatorade cup or something, but definitely paper. Grabbed it and thought - but it was weird - it had this stuff on it - but didn't seem to be organic or at least not something natural to the ocean. Upon closer inspection I see that it was SH*T spread around it- oh man - who does that!!! Instantly it was free from my hand with a great amount of disgust and humiliation. But lesson learned - look twice at what I am about to pick out of the water.
