Had my first Socal striped bass sighting, saw it in SD bay today it darted out from a dock. Just making this to see if anyone has see or caught these guys in Socal. (100% not just a mullet)

Surf guys bring them in here and there, although they might not tell you which beach.

My guess is that during the fall striped bass go to the bays. Or it could be simple as chasing bait.

That's their pattern up North. End of Summer they head back thru the Golden Gate. The biomass heads towards the Delta and Napa River. But lots do go into other estuaries, marinas, or shallow flats of the back bays.

I caught a 7lb striper out of newport back bay but that was decades ago. My buddy has caught 2 stripers surf fishing near ponto beach last year

Yup! I'm not from SD (from LA) and in LA there are occasional catches of striped bass in those types of areas. I hear the striped bass came from / transported from somewhere in the East Coast (New Jersey perhaps?) so the pattern should be the same if not similar.

Although it is a rare catch and you need to know where to go (and get the stars aligned) I'd still catch and release to keep the fishery growing.

It’s been awhile but I’ve caught a few in California, SILVERWOOD but I must say my best and biggest was out of Susiun Bay just to left of the C&H sugar factory on our HONEYMOON. AWESOME

I’ve heard of Ponto being a hotspot. Interesting stuff, it would be cool if someone tagged some fish to track they’re migration patterns in socal.

Here is a link to an article about acoustic receivers and tagged Stripers . striped-bass-in-the-pacific-ocean-when-where-and-why . DFG also released fish into the SanDiego river channel and Newport harbor back in the late 1970 - 80 era . I heard that possibly other estuaries / rivers as well . It was a joint effort with Hubbs Seaworld as I recall . I will say that the incidents of fish I have caught in So Cal surf have all been at estuarian outlets . WR

I used to fish near the C&H factory as well. Technically it's the Carquinez Strait, but yeah... Sweet spot to nail some stripers from shore if you time it right. Also some giant sturgeon in the same areas.

While fishing there from shore I didn’t have my binoculars but I saw in in the distance two guys carrying something up from their boat and I guess because it was so big I thought they were carrying a large body, I was curious and went over to see what happened and to my surprise it was a Sturgeon I had never seen one up close and it was amazing, I asked what they caught it on and his reply was GRASS FLIES it blew my mind thinking those things were so small how do you fish them.

Grass shrimp are usually fished on a special sturgeon rig that has two large hooks (think Gamakatsu Octopus 1/0 or 2/0) on wire leaders. You pin like 10 grass shrimp to each hook. The current is often ripping and you have to watch for a light bite.

I was fishing that area from shore once and I saw a giant sturgeon jump out of the water once. I swear it felt like slow motion because the thing was so long it looked like it would never end. Probably like a 6 footer.

Saw stripers in the surf at TP a few years back. Thought I mighta been hallucinating...it happens....but when I went online that night, a guy from the SCsurffishing board (Butch would remember Mai Tai) posted that he'd caught one there...with a pic.
