I just HAD to try out my new Daiwa BG 4000, so I took my buddy out to sunset cliffs. We tried to go to La Jolla, but parking was absolutely impossible, not to mention the number of people in the water. A shame, cuz the conditions were perfect out there. Barely any wind, light swell, rising tide.

Hit sunset cliffs at 3 pm; was using a mixture of shrimp and smelt chunks with heavy chumming. We probably managed 30 fish between of us; mostly vermin like lmb and wrasse with the occasional kelpfish. My buddy caught two lobsters and a freaking moray; had to enlist the help of a golf club-wielding passerby to coax the ****er back into the water. I was able to manage two just short sculpin and a 12 inch kermit-colored calico.

Now for the reel review: oh my god what have I been doing up until now this BG is AMAZING. Smooth, powerful, and pretty light; it really lives up to the hype online. I was able to muscle that calico out in no time; my old reel would have taken a bit and probably lost the guy to the rocks. Huge shoutout to chriswilson (idk how to tag people in posts) for hooking me up with this reel. I’ll see to it that it gets good use.

I just bought the 8000 version today stoked to try it out. The 8000 was cheaper than the smaller versions on a sale so I said **** it and bought the big one in case I ever want to try shark or ray fishing.

I have tackled some decent bat ray with ease. Throw some 100lb braid on it and chunk out some big stuff.

Glad you liked that reel. Was good to get out and meet you citruspirate

Looks like you had a solid day of fishing to put that reel to the test. Great catches !

Nice work. I've been running a BG 2500 on my light tackle perch/croaker rod, it's a very enjoyable reel. Only thing I don't like about the Daiwa spinners is the silent bail and the drag is kind of quiet. Superficial. Very nice reels though. Glad you got hooked up, Chriwilson is a good dude.

Yeah for sure. I've been doing the sandy beach bean/halibut hunting a lot lately, or looking for vina in the bays. Been hitting the sport boats a lot too. Half day tomorrow, offshore next 2 weeks after that. Hit me up let's fish brother. I feel bad that one spot didn't produce last time we fished together, although I did get a halibut on shrimp and that was super weird hahaha

Ha - that hali was dope actually, because it was so random.
I'm on NSF on Saturday then the SD in 2 weeks.

Might be looking at the Liberty or Grande on the 29th of August...

Just a dropper looped size 6 hook baited with shrimp chunks with a weight on the end. The calico was actually caught on a live shore crab. First and only fish I've caught using those things.

I feel like it should be good bait, but at areas where they are widely available the fish don't seem to like it! I'm looking at you, north jetty.
