Checked out Sutherland on Sat. Slept in and launched at 9:00. I live in El Cajon close to Lakeside and man, its still a long drive to get there. Lake looks really good. Had not been there in a year and I believe it was 2 years before that so we have a limited knowledge of the lake. We fished hard for a few hours for zero fish. We were worming and tossing jigs and could not buy a bite. Hate worming so I did what I like and what I understand. Started tossing hard bait top water. Pitching it into pockets like pitching a worm. And making long casts along edges of structure. Ended up doing well. Landed 10 from the top. All decent fish with a couple toads. Saw people land fish on worms and jigs just not from my boat. Less the long drive it was fun being there.

Much bigger. Those were only 3 pound fish. This one was a 6 pound fish. Most of the fish we got up there were 3 pounds. Thick fat fish. Total footballs full of shad and craw dads.

Because there are other bites besides top water . Flip bite and fly line Senko and thin senko and fluke as well blind Top water at Otay right now. Breakers getting ready to go. Sutherland had top water only for me. If the muck dies off I can see the blade bite doing well. From I was told chatter baits early? I’m never there early. Haha.

Good show Sir, there's definitely some chunks up there..! There's at least 2 different patterns going on there..but most people are trying to force other stuff on the fish and there not having it!

After going this past weekend we have a better Idea of what we should do depending on time of day. We talked about it today we feel we left some bites on the table by not trying a couple lures. We had them tied on in the box as well and thats a bummer. Might head back up in a couple weeks. Its just such a long drive.

Great job on the topwater! It is amazing how it can go from “notabite” to a great session with the first slurp.

I got tired of worming and saw some blue herons feeding on the shore. I picked up my top water bait and within 10 min had the first fish. We still did more worming yet I would toss the top water as we entered every location. Once I got a second blow up I never picked up the worm rod again. You hear people say its skill when this happens. Man, there is a lot of luck to it. If I was at a different part of the lake I may not have been bit at all? Just so happened that when they decided to eat we were there with them. First time at that lake in a year. It was just as much luck as skill.

Good you switched up to topwater, and in an area they were hungry. It can be hit or miss up here sometimes. Changing lures/tactics definitely helps at any lake, for that matter. Thanks for the report Rob!

Many times, as we become proficient Anglers, “Luck” results from experience + intelligence. Good job making the correct decision. It makes us or breaks us!

Nice fish Rob. Living in Lakeside I seem to hit El Cap more often then others. As much as I enjoy Southerland I also tend to shy away because of the drive. I wish I would have gone there this weekend though, the gnats at El Cap were frecking out of control yesterday. Made it extremely hard to keep your mind on why you were there

Might be the worst I've ever seen those pesky gnats! Reminds me of the Sierras and the nasty skeeters, without the bite fortunately!
