    Hello All,

I recently bought a Tranx 201HG to pair with my 8ft Teramar Medium-fast deckhand rod. I wanted to build something I could fish live bite with and also throw colt snipers and Jigparas. It's rated for 12-25lb test line.

Anywho, the reel seems really tiny for this rod and I'm starting to wonder if I should've went for the Tranx 301.

I was able to get 175 yds of 50lb PowerPro Maxquatro on it.

Worst case scenario, I could sell the reel and put that money towards a 301HG.

    Thanks for any feedback.

    fishing for what????????????????????????????
Calico & barries or yellows & palegics?????????
Calicos & barries get a rod with a reel seat / trigger stick, less drama mounting it.
maybe even a 400 would pair nicely with that rod.....
strictly on the thickness of the grip.
did you buy the reel clamp system to mount that reel to a deckhand series rod???
Also if the reel wasnt fished you can strip the braid off & return / exchange it.....

Are you planning on using this for bass at the kelp? A 20/25lb bait setup for the islands and paddies and stuff? The rod is probably fine if either of those is the case, but the reel is much better suited for bay bass, so I would definitely go bigger to the 300 or 400 depending on your answer to the above question. The 300 is a great reel if you plan on spending a lot of time at the kelp for the 3 B’s. The 400 has the power handle which is a must if we’re talking anything other than bass.
I personally have both and use the 400 a lot for anything from sp minnows to bigger swimbaits to flyline. I’ll occasionally get some weird looks from people for not using a conventional, but the spool is much lighter and I can cast a sardine or even a chovie a mile further than everyone else. It’s a very user friendly reel and it’s what I usually hand to rent rodders to fish with while I pick out their backlash or respool them, and they almost always comment how much easier it is to use than the rental.
Could also go Daniel’s route with a 220 or 229 and that might be a little cheaper and you can spool it with straight mono. I’ve owned those too and they’re definitely fun for those applications as well. It’s all about personal preference and what feels best to YOU.
Regardless, I’d Put the reel you have now on a bass rod and go fish the bay and find something bigger for the teramar.

Not sure if it's too much to ask, but I was hoping I could fish live bait with it for yellows and so forth. But also have something light enough to throw jigs/plastics for Calicos and the like.

Hello, I was hoping to use it as a bait set up for the Islands, but also something to throw colt snipers and other light jigs.

At this point, im thinking of taking it back or selling it, and putting that dough towards a 300HG. Thanks for the help,

Hmm, at this point Im thinking of pairing my tranx with a Proteus or Teramar west coast inshore spinning rod for a kick *** calico rig. I guess I could get a torium 16 for the deck hand teramar for YT.

Leave the tranx 200 for fishing inside the bay if you are going on a open party boat . Plus you can't even mount it on a deckhand rod unless you use tape and/or hose clamps. I don't even think the 300 tranx fits the smallest reel clamp on the market. Not sure tho.

This has been a valuable lesson on doing research before I buy. I kinda got lost in the excitement of things and pulled the trigger on it without even having my rod there to try it out.

You are correct, the smallest Tranx that Tiburon sells a clamp for is the 400. I don't do much bay fishing so I might just try to sell it. Or maybe it'll be motivation to start bay fishing.

Maybe I can put a Lexa 400 on my Teramar to throw swim baits and jigs.

I mean, seriously? Why the LPBC? Put a smaller/midsize conventional on that bad boy and jack em up...

Low profile baitcaster. Even a tranx 400 /lexa 400 is considered a low profile baitcaster.

Haha. I just felt like a bait caster would make more sense throwing small jigs. I guess having the level wind was my favorite part.

Anywho, now presenting my newest sniper rifle. Sorry for the blurry reel

Looks good. A big baitcaster is what I use for slinging smaller metal jigs and lite irons. 25-40lb leader depending on what I'm throwing. Have it mated to a 270h-8. Also use it for throwing sardines on 20-25 fluro locally.
If your reel came with little plastic brake shoes in the box. The red ones give max braking help and the white ones give less breaking assist. On my 20 sized daiwa stardrag I leave one white in.

The squall 12 I got had 40LB put on it. Doesn't this seem kinda heavy for that real? It'll primarily be for fly lining live bait and throwing jigs.
