This month could mark the beginning of the end for passenger sportfishing and whale watching boats! Boat crews and their families need your help.

As you well know, the Newsom Administration has proposed passenger boat regulations that require new engines and technology that is not feasible from a safety, financial or operational standpoint.

By the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) own admission, the proposed regulations will likely remove passenger boats made of wood and fiberglass from service. This would apply to over 80% of all boats! If boat owners can't afford to spend millions of dollars for new metal boats --- or you can't or won't pay twice as much for boat tickets to pay for the new boats, boat owners will be forced out of business.

We are asking you to send CARB an email that could convince Board Members that as boats go out of business millions of Californians will be denied access to the open sea and significant economic harm will come to coastal communities that depend on outdoor tourism. Let CARB know what it means to you and your family to be able to harvest your own food and to enjoy all the splendors of the sea!

Insert "CHC2021 Save Our Boats" into the subject line.
If experiencing technical difficulties, email cotb@arb.ca.gov

All emails will be posted on CARB's website for public viewing, so be thoughtful and compelling.

Even if you have written submitted an email in the past, please take a few minutes to write an email that could ensure you and future Californians a lifetime of fond memories at sea.

I sent my two cents of comments in just now, took less than a minute. SMALL price to pay to help this (OUR) industry. Post how easy it was to do, and that you've done so, when you do please! God bless America and our sportfishing industry! HoRaH.

Just click the link provided. Easy as posting here and took but a minute. These things have got to stop.
I'd be surprised if newsome ever fished in his life.

Wow! Just…wow! Is this for real?
I can only imagine the price charters will spike to if this true.
So sad CA. I’m still rooting for you, but there was a chance to get the guy out of office… Just saying.

But this CARB requirement wasn't just put up this year right? It's been years in the making and as I understand it there is financial assistance to assist with becoming compliant or did that time frame already pass? I think the only issue that I had read about was the lack of available power options?

    My understanding as well.
This ultimately started under Bush within the EPA, but CARB is looking to put this in place for 2023 with a 6 year compliance. The real issue of course is cost and comparison of today's and 2023's "cleaner" power/torque numbers.

Given the other industries previously affected, I wouldn't bank on this is going away.
Best case would be phasing in for new builds or during replacement.

I'm confused as to why SAC refers to this as a NEW rule since it has been iterating through since 2007/2008.
One thing's for certain, ride tickets are only going to go up from here...

    From 2013:
    EPA Tier 4 Emission Regulations.

Yeah I was reading that yesterday
They have been raising them based on "off shore" trips and then never lower the prices back down, this will just be another reason for them to do it. Just like when gas prices went up so they added to the ticket price and then when gas went back down they never lowered it, just the way of life for recreation.

You would think that they would derive the increase based on their rate of depreciation, but I agree once a fee gets baked into the overall price, it almost never comes out.

I gladly pay the extra $20 for these limited load rides.
Fishing a full-day with 60-70 is for the birds, can't imagine anyone wanting to go back to that.

60 - 70 people on deck, it's an eventuality that more than 1 gull gets hooked and lines subsequently get tangled - LoL

Nope, don't want to be anywhere near that...

Seagulls seem to love pandemonium. The more chaos the better!
