So I met Butch at 3:30 at the local Am PM.. got some goods, parked my truck, and then we headed for Shelter ramp. Ended up launching kinda late at 5:30. Was a zoo but we dunked the boat and headed for bait. Waited in line for 40 mins but it gave me time to rig up all our rods. The fog was frikin thick !! We used radar to navigate our way out of the bay and head south.. we headed out to the 371 after hearing good reports lately.. There’s a weird phenomena that happens when you’re heading through fog and it’s happened the last two trips.. It feels as if you’re constantly going left.. Like you’re making a counter clockwise circle, and you keep wanting to turn the wheel to the right. The navigation equipment doesn’t lie, so we just do what it tells us, but I can totally see how people could get totally disoriented in the fog and get lost at sea.. Anyway.. We got to the 371 area at about 8:30 and there were a lot of other boats out there all looking for that special kelp. We looked for probably 2 hours trying to find a good one, stopping at 8-10 decent kelps but nothing under them.. We finally decided to blow past everyone and head 10 more miles out west. It turned out to be a good decision.. After heading west for 30 minutes, we came upon “the big one”. The magic carpet, and it was huge.. Two garage doors huge ! We set up a drift, up wind about 30 yards, and I tossed out two scoops of bait.. Fish boiled everywhere, and we both hooked up instantly. It started out with Skip Jack, and then quickly turned into wide open Dorado. We took limits then started catch and release. Then the Yellowfin showed up and we brought two of those to gaff ( 22 lb. and 11 lb. ). We had the place to ourselves for 2 hours, before the armada showed up and we had 6 boats all around us. All good.. We got our share and had a blast.. It was smooth sailing on the way back to the ramp and we were able to run 26 mph comfortably all the way back in. Here’s a few pics..

Firm them in the freezer and trim them down, makes for some fantastic ceviche or sashimi.

Skipjack makes good tuna jerky. Made some last month, everyone thought it was Yellowfin!

We have a new 11 week old pup that wouldn’t leave my side while cleaning fish, so I was actually feeding the dog with it. Lol. Anyway.. I had this grand idea that I’d try marinating a little Skip Jack, Yellowfin, and Bonito and do a little side by side comparison.. Those Skip Jack are really dark meat.. It’s actually hard to cipher out the blood vein on those things.

Does anyone know what these little rice grain type worms are ? They were in the belly section of the Skip Jack. I’ve seen the little skinny ring worms in Halibut stomach lining ( pretty common ) but I’ve never seen these things before..
