Fished the end of the n. jetty with Gabemorales this afternoon from 2:30 - 6:30. Bite was pretty consistent and conditions were real nice: full sun, a bit of a breeze, and clear skies made for a lovely afternoon of fishing. It was bait thieves for all, as usual, but we both managed to get nice keeper sculpin; both sculpin were set off to fight another day.

However, this was also the most frustrating day of fishing I've probably ever had. Something was pecking at my bait, and pecking hard. I would wait for it to take my hook, would have it on my line peeling drag for a few seconds, and then it would spit the hook. Whatever it was, it just kept coming back for more. I probably fed that thing 4 whole shrimps before it got full and swam off. Damn fish played with my bait and my feelings.

All fish were caught on shrimp chunks and size 6 hooks.

Definitely a fun sesh. One of the longer ones I’ve done too! Fun species run nonetheless, within 30 minutes, we were catching calico, Blennys (a lot of them), sculpin, wrasse, and that mystery fish that was making hard hits. I have a theory on what it is, and I’m pretty sure it’s that but citruspirate and I will keep to ourselves til we land it the next time we go out there! ;)
Handful of keeper sculpins too, I managed 2 or 3? Don’t remember lol only took pics of 2.
Played ourselves into thinking they had to be 12” or 14” to keep... googled after we tossedem back and it was 10” lol. Bummer, next time!

Sounds like a tank wrasse to me too. Dart out of rocks, rip your bait and dart back in.

Nice work gentleman! I like eating sculpin too much to toss back legals lol

def a wrasse, if that happens I usually just move on, I have no interest in catching them anyways. I don't usually encounter wrasse when I move further up the jetty, there's also a nice pocket of rocks that produces consistently nice sized calicos. might not be here this time of year, but i know some good sculpin are in that area too

More of a failed hookset on both of us lol once we’d get it close to the top, it’ll come off. I’ve had similar issues with a particular fish. Stay tuned lol for updates :emoji_joy:
Feel like it was hitting too hard for an opaleye and a wrasse.
