Was able to catch and release a big BSB a couple weeks ago while Calico fishing on a 1 1/2 oz leadhead and 5 inch swimbait in 80ft of water thanks to today's tackle. Pulled hard and got her up in less than 10 min with a smooth strong drag. 7ft seeker inshore rod, Lexa 300h WN, 30lb braid, small 80lb swivel to 25 lb flouro.

20 years ago I woulda been using a similar rod with an Abu 5500 c3 with straight 10lb mono for that lure. Never would of got her off the bottom. That’s some solid work. Glad to see some nice pictures too. Guess it really did happen! Haha

How'd it taste?...... Had the pleasure of eating one deep fried out of a disc from an old tractor. This was 25 years ago our of El Rosario - Punta Baja. I am not usually a fan of cooked, but was scrumptious.

That being said (disclaimer for the fun police) not legal to take out of the water north of the border so great job in the release

Oh damn !! That last picture really puts things into perspective.. great catch, what an experience. I have the same rod, bought in 97’ paired with a Calcutta 400 and 17lb. Mono. Versatile everything rod..

Classic 113HN would still be more effective

Fat Spottie.. my buddy just bought a 113HN Baja Special two days ago and can’t wait to use it. Anyway, he was telling me some of the stats on that reel including stainless steel pinion and main gears, and double dogged. I guess my question is .. is it really necessary to double the dogs on any reel ? I mean have you ever heard of a single dog failing under load ? I guess it would turn into a freewheeling knuckle buster if it did actually fail ?

And are these Baja Specials known for being long launch jig throwers ?

I use mine for chucking everything when I want to use 50lb hard. It has some ridiculous casting ability. It’s really all about stopping power with that reel though... so I do believe the double dog is a must if you’re using a rod for 50lb and 60lb and your goal is to stop tuna and true groupers.

Very good.. thank you for that Mr. Spottie. My buddy wants to know what rod to pair it with for both casting and Yo-Yo. I’m thinking 9’ ?

I have the 4/0 W with Tiburon frame that I’ve used for trolling and 40lb. Bait rod. Not sure how it would throw a jig as it’s got the wider spool. Newell 338 on 8’ truline 36 is my jig thrower.

So the first rod I had was a full length EX Ulua with 6in from the butt and the tip. Now I’m going for a PH 93H.

It’s kinda of a stretch and it’s super long for 50lb... it’s not a super efficient rod. It’s really for foamer fishing and fish that are up heigh. I think the 800XH is the best you can get for the 113HN. Soft but has the backbone to turn cows.

I have broken 2 dogs over the years....both times it happened on Jigmasters w/40 lb string pulling hard on yellows. Stainless steel dogs are a good thing
