I have been bass fishing for a pretty long time( in fact, a very long time). I pretty much concentrate on trying to catch bass only and used a variety of lures(and live baits in the past) to try to entice bass into biting over the years.. There have been times when bass fishing I assumed I had a bass on the other end of the line and was surprised to see what I caught. Just the other day, I worked a spoon down deep and landed 2 fish that were not bass(a Crappie and Catfish). I thought this would be a fun post to see what some of you guys have caught.

Here are some of the fish that I could remember that ended up on the other end of the line while fishing for bass:

    BLUEGILL/SUNFISH/CRAPPIE
On a green crawdad at Miramar I landed a huge redear sunfish.
On a a pumpkin colored Senko, I caught a huge bluegill at Murray.
Using spoons...I have caught at least 8 big bluegill at Otay.
On a pumpkin colored creature bait I caught a crappie at Murray.
Besides catching a crappie on a spoon on Sunday, I have also caught 2
other crappie on spoons at Murray over the years.

    TROUT
Caught dozens of trout on Cinnamon blue vein plastic worms at Murray(one year I caught
6 trout which to me was crazy!).
Fishing El Cap(they did some trout plants decades ago) I was deep in North end and
caught a small trout on a Cinnamon blue vein worm. It was so surprising as I wondered
how in the heck that small trout made it so far without a bass eating it.
Using spoons...oh heck, that is a give-me, as I have caught lots of trout on spoons over the years.

    CATFISH
Used a red/white Dardevil spoon at Henshaw and caught a small catfish.
On a smoke colored Reaper at San V and landed a 9lb catfish.
Tossed a creature bait and landed a 4lb catfish at Murray.
Of course the 11lb catfish I caught on Sunday(11/24) at Murray on a spoon.

    CARP
A few decades ago fishing a pumpkin colored Senko at Poway, got bit hard and at first I
thought maybe a double digit bass...(ha ha )and when it never jumped, that dream was over, as I landed a 25lb carp on 8lb test. What a bummer!
Just found a pic of it...

Anyway.....Come on Guys/Gals....don't be afraid to share some of your stories
while bass fishing and what you caught instead... :)

    BLUEGILL/SUNFISH/CRAPPIE-
On a Warbaits Warblade like 1/2oz or 3/4oz just testing it at the lake
2.5lb Sunfish randomly throwing a Kastmaster off a dock

    TROUT
Pitching tulles with a creature bait and got one
Fishing hot dogs for catfish and got one

    Catfish
Getting one on a chatterbait w/ swimbait trailer was probably the most surprising
Caught one pitching creature baits and drop shotting as well

    Carp
Most surprising is either the river carp that ate a CD Rapala or one that sucked down a coolbaits/2.8 keitech combo

Hey Titos334 .....Thanks for sharing and those were some very cool catches!!!
A carp hitting a Rapala....WOW! Funny because at El Cap decades ago I had just caught a bass on a Rattle trap and my buddy Joe seconds later tossed a TD Minnow in the same spot. A second later something slammed it, his rod bend like crazy and the fight was on. Thinking it was a huge bass and it ended up being about a 6 lb carp.
Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving and tight lines to ya. :)

Only if you want your 11 lb friend to potentially become distant memory, as you catch all kinds of crap you never bargained for, hahahaha.. 40 lb carp on bass gear, anyone? Hahaha

I very seldom expect to catch a Bass when Bass fishing. So even a Bass is unexpected. But to go along with the spirit of the question, only Crappie and Catfish have been my untargeted catches. One cat was my PB.

    Crappies on crankbaits.
Catfish on spinnerbaits, dropshot reapers, crankbaits, texas rigged worms.
I caught a great big bluegill on a 1/2 oz. spinnerbait.
    I caught a carp on a crankbait.
    That's all I can think of.....:emoji_thinking:

Trout: the oddest was at Murray this year on an a-rig. Couldn’t believe it. Then later the same day I caught one on a crankbait.

Catfish: I caught a 10 pounder eight or so years ago on a deep diving crank that ate it on a pause and absolutely choked it. I’ve caught a few on spinnerbaits. I also hate catfish with a passion.

Carp: I’ve caught one on a crank years ago that wrecked me on my glass rod. I’ve also caught quite a few on the fly rod while nymphing for trout on the lower Owens.

Sunfish: the oddest I can remember was last year at Barrett on a 4.8” kietech in the mouth.

Wow.....a trout on an A-rig! And another one on a crank the same day. Those trout we’re hungrier than a bass that day.

Better to hit a Carp on the back with a crank, than to never have done it at all.

Had a catfish crush a spinnerbait about three cranks from the rod tip at the golf course pond, that was exciting!

That's Funny, I was fishing Shiners drifting when i hooked a huge Blue at El Cap. I fought that thing for a half hour. We saw him a few times and my buddy estimated 30# plus. I had on 8# mono and that fish Chuck Norris me. Long story short he broke off and as far as i know it still lives at the lake.
