I was wondering if you could get any information on Upper Otay's fish die off that seemed to occur about 2 years ago. It was a fun, quiet place to fish from a tube. Bass and bluegill fishing used to be good and then the water became very murky. People I know that used to fish it a lot are all wondering what happened. Has the lake been electroshocked to see if there are any fish in the lake? Any chance of the lake being restocked with fish? Thanks for answering all our questions.

I have no information nor was I aware of the die-off you are referring to. I suggest you contact Russell Black with DFW as it would be up to them to shock or restock the lake if necessary.

If it helps, I was at upper almost exactly one year ago. I showed up from Tahoe with the plan to fish this spot.

It was very quiet. Hauntingly quiet. No aquatic birds whatsoever was what I noticed first. Access holes to launch a float tube were almost completely grown in and it was hard to get thru the tulies.

As soon as I got in, a passerby shouted, "is there a tuber out there?", I could see the tip of his fly rod over the vegetation. I replied yes. He said there was a big die-off two years before and he didn't think it had recovered yet.

Water clarity was poor. Stained light green/grey with less than 3 feet visibility. No bass fry in the tulies. I kicked uber to the bluegill beds, couldn't see anything.

I made a loop almost all the way around and didn't even see a single turtle. A friend showed up before I finished the loop and I kicked fast straight across.

I started to sweat a little bit. I took off my hat, wiped my face with my dry hand, rinsed it I'm the water and wiped my face again. It tasted salty! I thought, I must be really sweaty. I did it again, still salty! It was the water! The water at upper pray tasted like salt.

I saw no aquatic life that day. Not a minnow, fish, insect, turtle or bird. Plenty of arboreal birds in the trees, but nothing alive in the water.

I'm surprised you wiped your face off with that water, your braver than I, anybody know of any changes in the lake since the rains?
