On my way to the commissary at Camp Pendleton this morning I came across an interesting little drama. I was on Vandegrift Blvd. beside the Santa Margarita River. On the opposite side of the highway from the river, I saw a couple of vehicles and some guys standing around that perpetual mud hole that's along there. It took me a moment to realize that they were surrounding a bison, who had apparently decided to enjoy a morning mud bath. Nobody seemed agitated, especially not the bison, who was calmly standing and waiting for whatever was going to happen next. The goal I'm sure was to get him back to a part of the base that is not so congested and safer for everybody concerned. I would like to have seen how it played out, but that is a no stopping area there. I suspect it is something they have to deal with periodically. One foggy predawn some years ago, I saw a mountain lion cross at the very same spot.

The San Diego Zoo gave the base some 10 or 12 back in the 70's. The herd has grown to usually be around 150 these days. They were genetically tested a few years ago and are a pure strain with no cattle genes. They roam the more remote areas of the base, but sometimes create issues like when they wander into a live fire zone or in today's case into an area around a busy highway.

This is my first Sharps, a Pedersoli 45-70 that I used to shoot BPCR Silhouette up at Pala. Then I got my Shilo and shot it until the matches shut down when Harold retired from the range in January. Built those sticks myself from cocobolo.

I have seen those Bison several times. A few friends and I used to go up to Case Springs and fish the two little ponds on top of the mountain. On the way up we would usually see them somewhere. Twice we had to turn around after they absolutely refused to get out of the way. They are massive.

Unfortunately, when I think of Bison I cannot help but think of people shooting them from trains and leaving their carcasses to rot. Horrible!
